Mayfair

Divinity's Reach, Salma District
Prefunctorily, Mayfair smoothed out his robes causing them to flash and catch the narrow strips of daylight coursing down. He huffed, briefly considered making a dash for freedom, and promptly discarded the idea.
"Well! Follow me, then." He waved his hand and set off back down the streets, for all the world appearing as though nothing had happened.

Volarr leapt from ledge to ledge, the charr engineer descending rapidly. "Nothing," he informed his companion, referring to the rooftop incident, upon reaching the cobbles. The necromancer merely nodded ominously in Mayfair's direction, prompting him to take off in pursuit.
With a wary glance upward, Vyrr began to turn away, about to bound off after the others. He paused for a moment however, glancing over his shoulder. "Good work, sapling... And you too, norn."

The Norn nodded to the Charr. She looked up as the human headed off, making her way after him through the cramped alleyways.

Mayfair led them further into the mass of the city. As he passed by, he dipped low and scooped up the cap of coins, holding it tightly with one hand. He seemed to count his footsteps with the coin, passing one into a second pouch every time his feet touched cobblestone.
Though quickly leaving behind the cramped alleys, it was only to arrive within similarly crooked streets of the Eastern Commons. There, amongst leaning buildings and suspicious eyes of the poorer folk forced into them, Mayfair led them to a particularly grim looking building. It was the sort of residence like much of the district: dark, lonely, and slowly deteriorating. The sort of building one might let under the assumption they would not be staying long, only for the truth to often prove quite contrary. Producing an ancient key Mayfair unlocked the front. "Watch your head," he called to the norn and stepped inside, climbing a row of creaky stairs. The second door at the top met the same touch as the first, and groaning open he led them inside a cramped little room.
The furniture inside belonged to the house, that much was clear. It had that self same appearance of age and use, but the smaller items, those which could be made portable, clearly belonged to the mesmer. A second set of robes with long sleeves for the road hung in a doorless closet, a travel satchel doing much the same off a chipped bed post, and on the dresser were arranged several jars of make up, brushes, and a mirror facing the room.
Towards this dresser Mayfair turned his steps.

The two charr followed the human into the room, the engineer looking around with a snort of disdain whilst the necromancer remained firmly focused on Mayfair.."

Jadyr ducked; squeezing into the human structure carefully. She managed to brush walls only when neccesary, avoiding any accidental crashes.

Aware of the growing number of people squeezing into his small room, Mayfair made haste to pick up the mirror. Then, turning it over, slid his hand beneath a concealed back. He hesitated, and glanced over his shoulder once more, but he soon realized how foolish it would be to stop now, and returned to it. What he drew forth was a second, smaller mirror with a delicate silver frame resembling two women bracing the glass. At the top and bottom were two masks, one of tragedy, the other comedy. Replacing the first mirror on the dresser, he clasped the mirror in both hands before himself and showed them. Yet, strange to say, the glass did not reflect anything on its polished surface.
Mayfair sighed. "This. They wanted this."

Vyrr appeared suitably impressed, eyeing the procured object. "Ilya and Lyss?" the necromancer pronounced, noting the two figures.
"Gods,"
Volarr growled, turning and spitting, catching the gist of it.

Mayfair grimaced a little at Volarr's spitting but, to be fair, it wasn't like the floor would suffer for it.
"Yes. It's called the Mother's Mirror, and it...Well, it'd be easier to show you."
Mayfair turned and aimed the mirror at the one it had so recently been hidden behind. He seemed to tap something in the back. The air between the two mirrors shimmered like a desert baking beneath the sun and, when it faded, it was not the room that the second mirror showed, but a verdant forest decorated with flowers.
Putting down the Mother's Mirror, Mayfair reached through the altered image of the second mirror, and when he pulled his hand free he held between two fingers the stem of an elegant red flower. He turned and presented it to the norn with a slight smile. A moment afterwards, the image faded from the mirror, and once again merely reflected the room.

Jadyr took the flower skeptically, holding it carefully in the palm of her hand. "They're not..." She informed the Sylvari.
Her eyes fell on the mesmer again. "Explain yourself."

"It's an artifact," Mayfair explained, holding the mirror against himself protectively, eying each in turn as though now that they knew its power, he was sure they would try and take it. "My...mother, found it. When the bandits learned what it did, they wanted it. And I..." The mesmer shrugged, dismissing his own motives as simple, obvious, and perhaps leaving it to each to draw their own conclusions, and paint him in whichever light they shone on him. "Well, I took it. And here I am."

"Where was it found?" Vyrr asked, interrupting the engineer.

Mayfair remained still for a moment longer, then suddenly seemed to explode into action. He rushed about the room, grabbing his satchel and beginning to throw item into it. "Well. I suppose it does. So now you know. And now, if you don't mind, I have to go. Far. Far away from here, before they come back. They know I'm here, now. So I have to go."
