He hurled the bag upon the bed. At once Mayfair began stuffing it with clothing, wrapping up delicate bottles in cloth with quick, practiced motions. "Gods, I haven't known that for years. I used to, but then I used that up long ago. No. No, I don't. I'll be fine. I always am. I know how to survive." He paused in the midst of wrapping a bottle of make up and glanced up, as though only then realizing he was even talking to someone. He planted a smile back upon his face. "Yes. I'm sure." He shoved the make up bottle deep into his bag.

"And who'll protect you when you and your guardian angel are asleep?" Vyrr inquired, in as casual a tone as the charr could manage, leaning on the nearest table, watching Mayfair thoughtfully.

Mayfair glanced at the Charr with exasperation. "And what do you propose? Hire a bodyguard? I'm not a noble with coffers overflowing. Does this look like the home of a person with cash to spare?" he asked, gesturing at his surroundings.

"There are people you could turn to, unless you'd rather spend your whole life running," Vyrr stated, idly inspecting his claws, though the charr looked meaningfully to the human out of the corners of his eyes at the same time.

Mayfair stopped and stood very still. He stared at the Sylvari with amazement, then with suspicion, like an alley cat offered food from someone, and wondering if it dared risk an approach. He had the spare pair of robes in his hands, the weary cloth crinkling as his grip tightened on the plainer fabric. The sun cut low in the window, becoming obscured beneath a tall building, the Commons rarely seeing much natural light.
"...Where are you going?" Mayfair then asked very tentatively.

"I'm looking for better hunts." Jadyr interjected, even without the question directed at her. She shifted now sitting on the floor despite herself. She stretched briefly, glad to no long be forced to crouch.

Mayfair sighed and threw the cloak around his shoulders. "As good a direction as any. He'll be looking for me soon anyway."

Mayfair nodded gloomily. "Irus."
Character:
Irus
Location:
Beggar's Burrow
They had been caught before they even made a mile. Two bandits, heavily armed, had been waiting for them at the gates, knowing it was there the two fleeing thieves would pass, had they chosen to flee, and seeing them, had clubbed the pair in the head, and dragged them away. The scuffle had been noiseless, quick, and as all true criminal things, was done in the shadows.
When the pair had regained their senses it was to the soft lapping of waters against the edge of the boat. It was dark, a single lantern at the head of the boat lighting the corridor of stone caverns rubbed smooth by the tide. They were untied, but a woman with a red bandana hiding her face watched them, scars littering her arms and face, eyes glinting sharp as diamond, and her hair ebony as the darkness all around. She toyed with a knife, her long fingers calloused from the handling in the tips and palms, the true marks of an artist. Neither of the two moved, watching her, listening to the second man slowly pole the boat deeper into the throat of the earth.
The cavern widened in a vast chamber like the stomach of a mountain. Firelight glowed on the shore revealing slim figures like shadows moving about. So large was this cavern that several shacks had been shored up against the walls, and above the uneven cut of a sky of stone bore down upon them heavily.
Several figures lurked at the end of a crude dock, though they all kept a respectful distance from the foremost one. He was clad in leathers, red and black, with steel over his knees and shoulders. A drab brown coat was thrown over his heavy shoulders, and two belts crossed his chest in an X. Unlike those who made up the camp, he did not wear the red bandana about his face, leaving coarse hair under his chin plainly visible for the pair of thieves. But what worried them most was when the lamp drew nearer, and its light flashed against an eye. It was more a lens, the copper grafted to his skull like a copper goggle. The glass within flicked between blue and red, like the measured flipping of a coin.
The boat nudged the dock. The first man rose. "Sir. We-"
Irus raised a hand to forestall him. "You're twenty seven, but seem a bit younger thanks to your small frame," he said in a measured voice, eye clicking as it switched between lenses. "Likely because of early malnutrition. You have a scar across your cheek, self inflicted by the angle of the cut and heal, so you like to be seen as tough. Your clothes are old, but fit you well, too well. You can't afford a tailor, therefore I assume you used to be apprenticed to one and learned much from him. But not enough. You couldn't find a job as a tailor so you quit or, more likely, you left from one of the fallen kingdoms. Ascalon by your accent.
"You came to Divinity's Reach perhaps looking for work, but failed to find it. So you joined the bandits. Newly, I'd say. However, you're ambitious, but sadly rather cowardly. I know this because you're back here." The eye flicked to red. "And you don't have the mirror."
In a single motion Irus drew a pistol and fired. The thief clutched his chest, fell over the side, and struck the waters with a splash.
The second survivor stared, then looked back to Irus, who had now turned the pistol towards him. "I suspect you met with additional interference, hence your fleeing, and alone. But not the guards, or else you would have tried to run out of the city rather than deeper, as these two were set in one of the inner gates."
"A norn, two charr, and a sylvari," the unfortunate bandit blurted out, speaking as quickly as he could. "We didn't know they were there. They followed him. They came up afterwards and-"
The crack of a pistol again. The second joined the first in the waters, and Irus lowered his still smoking gun. His lens flicked to blue. "How interesting."

At the mention of names the mesmer seemed to recall himself. He beamed, the rays of light sneaking through the window seeming to bend in the pane and flash agaisnt his silvery hair and glittering cloak.
"A pleasure!" he cried, crossing one leg behind the other and dipping into a quick bow. "I am Mayfair! Mesmer extraordinaire."

"Centurion Vyrr Grimtongue, Grim Warband, Ash Legion," the necromancer recited levelly.
"Gladium Volarr Chokeshot, of the former Choke Warband, Iron Legion," the engineer spat.
"Irus," the former of the two began, not about to abandon the topic in favour of niceties, "like the New Krytan word 'iris'?"

"Have you ever seen this Irus?" Vyrr inquired, ignoring the engineer not for the first time.
Flake Dallin
Beggar's Barrow
"Well well well, if it ain't the one-eyed man. 'bout time too," came a nonchalant voice from the shadows, the source of which happened to be a wide-brimmed hat. Or, to be precise, the shady figure leaning leisurely against a nearby post underneath the wide-brimmed hat. Contrary to the muted fear and thinly-veiled unease displayed by the majority of those present, disguised in vain on a multitude of levels and by various means, the bandit that had spoken maintained the genuine air of smug superiority afforded only to those who could buy it or those who had no right to it in the first place.
He was of the latter category, hands fidgeting erratically not with terror but an ingrained inability to hold still when engaged in an act that did not involve a sleight of the hand or a slit of the throat. The two mithril daggers fastened to his belt, with their unusual curved handles, were a testament to the fact, taken from one with twice the raw power and thrice the moral fibre of he. An assassin he was not, nor would it have been fair to call him an elementalist, yet it was in the latter arts he had dabbled and it was with them he had earned his scars. A successful bandit by allegiance and a double-dealing, conniving half-elementalist by trade.

Irus glanced at the other man, then past. He turned and began walking back into the cavern, the girl with knife hastening after him with a long, loping gait like some kind of jungle cat. "We'll prepare. Set a watch at every gate out and the Asura Gates. He'll walk. He always does. A fear of the mirror I suspect. Tell them not to try and take him though. Not yet. See. Report. And we'll do the rest later."
The girl rasped something, her voice nearly unintelligible.
"He won't bother. He knows we have eyes on every carriage and caravan, if not hands."
