Asher got to his feet, albeit unsteadily, and surveyed the wreckage. "It looks like we surprised them before they got much," he commented, looking at the books and maps stacked haphazardly on the table. "Beside my boss," he added darkly. "We need to find out where they're taking him."

"Yeah that's ... great," Saito drawled, looking across the room. "Might want to save some of the books before the water damage gets it," he then idly mentioned, grimacing at the ice that was starting to show signs of melting.
There was a man in a dapper suit near the open exit into the backyard, idly clapping his hands together as he watched Akira and Erin pull themselves into the room.
"Good show, for a bunch of children," he remarked.
Saito looked over at the distinctly empty space beside the door, "Oh great, not you again. Also, I
swear
I'm like the youngest person here and I'm not really a child!"
"Semantics, you all certainly bumble about like a pack of them. Regardless, you get points for trying."
"I'd like to see you do better!"
"I suspect you would. Maybe if you ceased getting shot and being quite useless, you could put your brain to use, boy," the man stated, checking his wrist watch absently. "These are criminals, boy, and no matter how disorganized they may be they need to communicate."
Saito grabbed his head, "What does that even mean?" he cried, releasing his cranium and tightening a hand into a fist, before turning away from the wall he had been yelling at when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.
The teen bent down, grabbing the phone that had accidentally been left behind by the fella in the ski mask.

The barest hint of amusement pulled at the starlet's expression as she twirled a lock of golden hair around her finger, "Ah yes, the abilities," she murmured. "A curious consequence. You'd think new life would be enough of a gift in order to escape death."
"I thought it was a fluke. No, too spontaneous a word. A miracle. Far more appropriate," Clover said with few breaths. "Just for us. A bit far off the mark, wasn't it?"
She giggled, a musical chime, "I suppose not. You seem quite familiar with this right little gambit life appears to be playing. There are more than us, then?"

Said the voice.
"No. No more killing. I do not kill. A good man does not kill"
Justice replied. Trying hard not to bring attention to himself as he did so.
"That, that is quite alright"
Justice looked up and smilled at the strange man.
"Do you have a name? good man must have a name"

Dead trees stretched upwards; skeletal limbs reaching for the sky. Janet bounced along through the wilderness, ascending a hill as she went.

Oscar took the hand and pressed it, looking the other steadily in the eye. "If that's his name, yes. Oscar Harvey, and this is Mei." He gestured with his free hand to point out the obvious presence of the Chinese girl.

"You bet yer sweet arse there are! F'r instance, that girl 'ou tried 'nd waste me? *!@#$ could deflect bullets roight good she could. 'Nd there 'r plen'y more. Some a them less 'n complimen'ary. Like that King fellah. Right cocker 'e is. Comin' round 'ere wavin' 'is tackle 'n nuts in everyone's face like 'es top ^&*!. Roight $%^&ah eh?
"'Course, some ah bettah," he added. As he spoke, the faint vibrations of a heavy bass thrummed against their feet.

"How nice of you to ask! My name is Buster Weiss. Magician!" he proclaimed, producing a rabbit from his hat. "My card," he said, proceeding to give Justice the animal.

Akira raised his eyebrow as he heard the monologe. "Junkie..." He muttered disgustingly under his breath, wanting Saito not to hear but still curse him.

They leaned back against the wall, with a muffled groan, "Permanently."

Clover tapped a finger against her chin, "He does seem a bit like a beastly character, doesn't he? Power does sometimes go to the head," she meaningfully moved her digit up above her ear with a sagely nod, before looking down at the floor. "Oh! It sounds quite like there's a party going on down there!"

"What's that?" Asher asked, looking at the phone. As he leaned over, the screen flashed with a new text.

"... did you break it?" Asher asked, raising his eyebrows.

"Good, good. He has an eye for talent, you know," the man said jovially, shaking firmly. "Oh, but where are my manners. My name is Mr. Hé. It's a pleasure to meet you both."
He turned and beckoned them into the building. The lobby was spartan, but obviously designed by someone with a lot of money. Name brand furniture was placed around the room, which lounge lighting illuminating it all. Hé pressed the button for the elevator and asked, "Now if you don't mind me asking, how did the two of you, well, die?"

"I mean no disrespect, mr Hé, but I do mind. That being said, I remember it all very clearly. I had a contract with a power station. They had some issues with staff time management. Nothing serious, really. Took a shortcut through the plant on my way home, steam pipe exploded. I was, as they say, cooked alive," the young man explained, voice level. "Quick, but quite painful," he concluded.

Saito examined the phone for a few moments, as if entranced by the wild, incomprehensible text before flinching when Asher spoke up. He looked at the others, going stone still, eyes hollowing at the stares currently latched onto him. Dialing his timeline backward, the teen recalled the outburst not but a few moments prior.
Silently, he passed the phone to Asher, his hands shaking, unable to muster any words under the obvious gavel of judgment.

Mei looked up at Hé, nervously biting her lower lip, dancing between her feet as she followed the two men. She then quickly fixated on Oscar as he explained his story, her eyes going wide. The schoolgirl clasped her hands behind her back and awkwardly added her piece, "About a year ago, back in China, at my old school. There was, uhm, a gas leak. It led to a fire and ... I got stuck in one of the classrooms. The door jammed and ... and ..."
The girl stopped talking, having been swallowed up by her hoodie as she nearly disappeared into the comforting confines of the heavy pink fabric.

"So you do tricks and slight of hand. That does not seem like something a good man would do"
Justice reached out a hand.

Images from the lobby flickered in the air; hovering above the pedestal. Muffled voices echoed from speakers, slowly becoming clearer, although sounding like gibberish to begin with.
The cameras zoomed in on the man and the young girl, studying them carefully.
"Subjects Testimony Recorded." A smooth female voice echoed out from the speakers. "Storing For Future Reference..."
Janet "Jayjay" Boom
Takaneko Island, Otherworld
Suddenly, Janet was forced to halt. Quietly, she stared outwards.
The lake sat still, dead as the rest of the world. The peaks of the City's buildings could be seen across it, breaking the horizon. She watched for a moment, suddenly looking away as one of the dark spikes seemed to move.
There was no wind in Hell. The water did not move in the breeze, or ripple with any outside force. Jayjay shivered, noting something else off about the surface. There was no reflection. The body of water sat completely opaque, a dull grey in color.
"Janet!"
The girl spun, rounding her attention back to the trees she had walked through. Quickly, she brought her shotgun up, ready for anything.
"Janet Boom, answer me when I speak to you!"
Her eyes darted back and forth, trying to find the source of the voice. Darkness filled the path she had walked, like a shadow blanketing the world behind her. "Make me!" She shouted, not expected a proper response.
For a moment, the shadow began to fade. She could see again, and the woman felt relieved. Sighing, she lowered her gun, grinning in triumph.
"What did you just say to me?"
The voice was full of anger, rage that snapped Jayjay back to reality, she looked up, the darkness nearly surrounding her, reaching for her, as if trying to consume her. Quickly, she fall back; firing into the shadow. "#$%^ you!" She screamed, breath caught in her throat.
"You rotten little $%^&*, how dare you talk back to me!"
Janet screamed, the shadow rising upwards, blocking her vision of the sky now. Opening her gun, she reloaded, pumping it. "You're!" She fired, pumping again. "Not!" She repeated the process. "My!" And again. "MOTHER!"
The final shot rang out, slugs rocketing into the darkness. It shuddered a moment, Jayjay backing up still. She stopped, her feet splashing into the water behind her. A scream echoed from the shadow, a low growl from the deepest nightmares. Charging forward, it looked to overtake the woman.
Janet stopped, she could feel something around her waist, an arm that seemed to pull her along, wind flowing against her. She braced herself, squinting.

Jayjay's eyes shot open, the girl gasping in surprise; limbs flailing.

"Jayjay!" Tell threw himself on top of the girl, hugging her tightly. Jonathon watched from his chair beside the bed, one of the few pieces of furniture in the rather spartan hotel room.

"I think you did," Asher said, holding the phone up to the light and squinting at it. "Unless it's in code, I guess. But who sends texts in code? I mean, come on," he complained.

"My apologies, sir and madam," Hé said gravely. "It is hard to remember." He stepped onto an elevator, nodding at the camera outside as the doors shut, then continued. "But I'm afraid it's something that must be done. I, myself, was once hesitant to share my story, but I had to when I came to work for Mr. Zhang."
He bowed his head for a moment. "He required me to repeat my story multiple times, to ensure that every ounce of knowledge that could be deduced from it was," he said earnestly, raising his head again to look them in the eye. "The more you know about your death, the more you will know about what you can do. And what miraculous things we can do, eh?"

Saito lowered his head, pulling his hood down to further shadow his face. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he ramped up the volume on his music, the beats barely audible to the rest of the room, and hurried out the door to the backyard without a word.

"Hm. How crass," Clover observed, raising a delicate eyebrow as she peered at the floor, as if wishing she could see beyond it.

Jayjay gasped, freezing for a moment, head darting side-to-side to see her surroundings.
Sighing, she settled, smiling and hugging Tell back.
