Evlyn Linder, Scarlet Crusaders
Dragonblight
There were a few murmurs of disapproval among the scarlet ranks, but most were quiet, staring at Sybil or the inquisitor with awe. There was a sudden clang as someone dropped not only their jaw but their weapon, too. Nobody seemed to notice as their attention was all fixed on the pair front and center.
Linder was taken aback, too. Why had she not seen this coming? It felt all too obvious now. At the same time, she felt a great deal of admiration for the man willing to not only toe the line, but push it farther. And Sybil, well, now she could serve again. Not as a slave to the traitor prince's will, but as an indestructible champion of the righteous cause. It was glorious.
Pity they could not all see it. As if on cue a woman stepped forth, grip tight on her sword but smartly enough keeping the blade lowered. "This is wrong!" she cried. In a way Evlyn admired her, too. Willingness to stand up against
anything
for one's beliefs was the core of the Scarlet Crusade, after all.
No one else joined her, even if their eyes betrayed that they wanted too.

"Now that," Miter said distinctly, "is a very interesting thing to say to an inquisitor."
There was a faint clank as Sybil bent down and picked up her sword. She handled it with stiff fingers, turning over the weapon. Recognition flickered in the yellow lights of her eyes.
"There is no wrong means for the Crusade to perform its holy duty," Miter continued, taking not a step towards the woman, challenging her from where he stood. The initial blaze of light had faded. Miter's eyes glowed from the shadows about his head like a golden glow at the end of a long tunnel. "
We exist to defeat the Scourge, and all those who stand against us. Do you know what it means if we are wrong?
" he asked. "
It means everything we've done. Everything we fought for. Everything we've sacrificed was for nothing.
"
But I am a man open to other ideas
," Miter continued.
"I am open because I have conviction. I believe in the Crusade, if not always the men and women who man it. Because they are mere men. The Prince was a mere man. But I believe in the movement.
"
So tell me, soldier. How is this wrong? I will listen. And then, I will judge if you are right, or if you speak heresy.
" His fingers somehow found their way around the spikes of his mace, gripping the skull head as if weighing it. "
And I am trained to deal with heresy
."

Once challenged, there was no way to back out. The crusader seemed to know it. Everyone's eyes turned her way. Her voice was thick with fear when she spoke.
"Arthas did the same. He believed in the Light but it turned away from him when he took up that sword. It's too dangerous!"

"Where are we?" The knight asked.
"We already told you, dragonblight." The elf replied bitterly.
"What were we doing?" He asked again.
"Walking to frostmournes cavern. So, east." The lady deadpanned.
"Thanks Zakire." Death knight Wylliem Swordhaart responded.
Zakire Maegicia rolled her eyes.
Kyr'gaer Bloodraven rolled his head on his shoulders. "So let's get moving." Said the elf.
Twylith Mallich looked over the landscape. "Do you think Morginar teleported us close to the cave?" The white dressed one asked.
"Depends on how much of a jerk he is today." Zakire spoke bitterly.
"Are we there yet?" Sir Swordhaart asked supidly.
"No." Zakire replied instantly. "Ask when we are inside those rocks over there" The lady pointed at some mountains in the distance.

But I do not deny the Light
," Miter said, "
I embrace it. It's righteousness acts through me and all of us. Look
." He held out his hand and a golden glow flickered within. "
I wield the Light still. My conviction is sound. Even bearing the very power of our enemy it does not forsake me.
"
Soldier.
" He closed his hand, and the Light suffocated in his fist. "
Do you believe your judgement better than the holiest of all things?

Pearls of sweat gathered on the crusader's forehead. She quickly glanced at a select few others, presumably friends, for support. None would be had. The woman cast down her eyes, and a meek "no" escaped her lips.
'You just lost the game', was all Evlyn could think.

...and the trap slammed shut.
The crusader showed no sign of believing she was off the hook, but had no real choice in the matter. After a moment's hesitation she took the first step forward.

Good. Then you need not fear the shadow.
" Miter moved in a blue, ramming the black ice into the crusader's chest. The chill of undeath seeped through the ice, black flamed rolling across the crusader.

At first nothing seemed to happen. The woman just stood frozen, as if she didn't even feel the physical impact. But there was something with her eyes.
The strange flames suddenly engulfed her completely, hungrily licking her body. Her milky skin turned grey, her hair bone-white. The eyes first grew dim, then lit with a faint glow.
The other crusaders watched in silence.
Linder turned her face to the dark flames, bathing her skin in their absent light. The Shadow had never felt closer or as powerful.
After mere moments the flames died away. The woman stood there, transformed. She gasped, and the sound was a lifeless, hungry sigh.

"
You see?
" Miter said, spreading his hands. "
There is no need to fear the darkness. For our way is made clear by the Light. We have the strength of purpose to wield it. We have stolen the very power of our enemy. And we shall use it to destroy him!
"
So rest secure, soldiers of the Scarlet Crusade!
" Miter threw his arms open in triumph. "
Never again shall we need fear death! It is our weapon now. Our might! And between the darkness and the light, we shall crush the Lich King, and free our world from his, and any other blight!

The woman said nothing. She stood unnaturally still, until she suddenly planted the tip of her drawn sword into the ground and kneeled before Miter. As she did so, another man stepped forward, throwing out his arms as if to embrace the inquisitor. "If the light deem me worthy, I am ready!" he proclaimed, closing his eyes and awaiting his judgment.

Miter plunged the bloody ice into the new crusader. As the black flames licked up the soldier, Miter turned to the rest of the group. "
Three of you. Return to the base camp and inform the Highlord I have succeeded. We will need supplies shipped her immediately. Stone and stonemasons. It is not the Lich King's power alone we shall take
." He smiled grimly. "
We shall fortify this place into a new fortress. And from it, bring forth Arthas's doom.

Perhaps a little too eagerly, four crusaders detached from the ranks. Looks were exchanged, and one's shoulders slumped with resignation as he returned to the half-circle. The other three hurried away.
The latest of the Scarlet death knights suddenly drew his final, dying breath. He looked down on his hands, flexing his fingers. Then he too kneeled beside his predecessor, and another stepped forth.

Again Miter knighted a new knight in death. Then he let out a slow cold breath that froze in frosty particles in the air. "
That is enough. For now. We have more to do and I would further study our new weapon.

The trio rose, wordlessly circling around and forming a file behind Sybil. The living knights and the dead stared at each other, one side in terror-filled admiration and the other without emotion.
Evlyn snatched the initiative. "Your orders, sir?" she asked rather loudly, to make sure everyone knew they still were a military.

Yes. Orders

Prepare camp about the mouth of the cave. Secure the end of the path leading up to it. That should do. For now.
