You may be able to claim "full epics", but if the majority of that is PVP gear, then you fail. PVP epics are
filler
slots. Yes, they will do - but if your goal is PVE content, then your gear should not be PVP unless you have nothing better.
Eh?
Tell that to
Merciless Gladiator's Shield Wall
or
Merciless Gladiator's Slicer
or about a million other PvP items.
Compare the above to
Aldori Legacy Defender
and
Talon of Azshara
and prepare to be severely underwhelmed by the power of PvE epics.

I think he's talking about the S1 gears. They are much more common than S2 gears. Granted you can still come into arenas losing 10 games a week for months to get your S2/S3 gears, but many people don't have time/patience so they just go for BG stuff.

And in respects to your choice in weapons, I would have chosen
Umbral Shiv
for it's atk spd for applied devastates and front loading of threat - in addition to it's 2 sockets. I'd take the hit on normalized damage for the increased versatility from just the slots alone. But hey, to each his own.
Umbral shiv is actually too slow for raid tanking. You want to go for one of the many 1.6 speed weapons if possible. The obvious alternative to the umbral shiv, also being from ZA, would be the
Cleaver of the Unforgiving
.
The two weapons linked above, btw, were meant as examples of DPS swords.

Raylite is like the ubiquitous yet still present Nabterayl of the PvE forums.

I respect your position durzog, and I agree that the mindset is important. It's just that the PvP items are guaranteed "drops" whereas the PvE stuff isn't - apart from badge gear. I am still stuck with my nightbane shield, because my lootluck is crap both on gruul, in ZA and even on kaz'rogal (though I'm not first in line for his shield, /cry). So in a way, I ought to go PvP for a clear upgrade to my shield. I just can't stand farming honor for more than 15 minutes at a time... =/
And yeah, I do think it sucks that the failed itemization by blizzard should "force" me to do PvP.

There's a big difference in group compositions, group synergy, and everything else between T4 25-mans and the end of Sunwell. Not really sure how/if you're planning to address that, but in any case I'd be happy to collaborate with you on some of this stuff if you don't want to shoulder all the work yourself.

For whatever it's worth, the generality of the guide is probably a good thing, I think, for brevity's sake. I would also add, if you don't mind me saying so, that even if you don't plan to be in Sunwell anytime soon, and have no interest in min/maxing for raiding, it's a good idea to be aware of the theory and mathematics of your class that has been worked out by
others
. (Warning: if you're not a mathematically-inclined person, expect your brain to hurt a bit. These dudes are serious.) Anyway, if you're not getting the most out of your character, at whatever gear level you play, you're doing yourself and the rest of your raid a disservice.

And also, Maxdps is sortakinda a worthless site. It has major documented flaws in its algorithms for rogues, dps warriors, hunters, and shadow priests, and there's probably more that I haven't seen. I would definitely hang a huge caveat on that one at the very least.
