It doesn't "spawn a popup", it just opens a link in a new window when you click on it, just like any other banner ad--which is presumably a lot better than redirecting the entire browser. It also doesn't spawn a popup on right click--I'm not sure what's causing that behavior, you might check your PC for spyware on that one.
I've been getting reports of blocked popups on the homepage too, but not from clicking, just opening the home page. It's not spyware.

Another clean homepage sacrificed in the name of revenue.
This. ^^
I'll click on your ads all day if it helps keep the site running, just don't make it so I have to maneuver the page with laser precision to prevent clicking it over and over. That is really stupid.

(giving my opinion) I entered at the main page and though I had found a different site. That said, I think the ad is a lot more tasteful then random/generic block or banner ad on every other page. To boot, it's for a gaming relevant product, not the Lasik surgery ad I'm currently seeing to my right as I type this.
As Mal said, it's one of those one-day type deals that looks cool and deals in slightly relevant terms to gamers. I, similarly to him, don't quite get the uproar. :/

SELL OUT MOAR PLX

Let me try to explain the reason why I think people are upset about this. When Wowhead first became known to the public it had the upper hand on other database sites as they were all financed by gold selling adds and leveling services.
Now I think most people have carried this in their subconsciousness that Wowhead is a site that won't
'sell out'
their users for the sheer point of extra cash. Now, while I still understand that a site in growth, like Wowhead, needs the money to keep updating and expanding server capacity I think this add is in conflict with the image that a lot of people have carried around for the last year and a half or so.
I just thought I'd elaborate at least for my own reasons. This is why
I
feel that adds like these are a mistake.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. This is a hand approved campaign (obviously, we had to put it up there by hand).
Yes it does spawn on right-click. You must not have tested this in all browsers. I'm on FF3 RC 2, I right click, I get a "popup blocked" (which when I enabled the popup, I went to
www.iz3d.com
). I'm also on Linux, I
don't
have spyware.
Mis-clicks on the main page, which happen to everyone, now open up a new window
and takes you to that window
. It's destructive to the user's enjoyment of the site, and disruptive to those of us who use the site every day. This is the most poorly implemented advertisement I've ever seen (even the scroll-across-the-window ads are better, because you
know
that clicking there will take you elsewhere).
Take off the "onclick", and put a "click here for more information" link on the page. I'll admit I like the image, and visually it is a decent advertisement, but the onclick is a terrible decision.

I do not like. I was liking the clean and simple frontpage of WoWhead. Now there is this big T-Rex face.... I am not a fan of it.
About the "mouse trap"... learn2click damnit
I don't know why everybody is so concerned about this--it's not a "new homepage", it's just a site skin ad, same as you will see on a nearly daily basis on Curse, Photobucket, IGN, Gamespot, etc.
This is the reason I never go on these website and why i stopped to use photobucket.
.

I didn't even realize the homepage was an on-click ad. I actually went to Google to look up the brand's homepage. I guess I'm dumb or something, but I don't have any problem using navigational menus or search boxes without just randomly exploding in a fit of clicking everywhere on the page. I also didn't experience any forced pop-up, so I don't know what to say there. I only visit the Wowhead homepage about 50-60 times a day.
That being said, sorry if you can't block it or something. It'll be gone in no time, seriously, and while I'm not a huge fan of it, I do appreciate what it does for us as a company. By the time you go through the effort of finding some way to block it, it'll be gone - seriously. We didn't "ruin" the damn site - as Malgayne stated, it's really no different than other major site's ad campaigns - if anything it's
way
less flashy. Does this "justify" anything? No - but I'm not trying to. I'm willing to accept a day or two of advertising for a pretty fair product (
reviews here
) knowing that it's helping our small team have to sell out
less
.
The site is still awesome, the database still works fine (if not, recently, better than ever before) and if it's going to change your judgment of us as a site that we passed probably one of the least intrusive temporary advertising campaigns possible then I'm really sorry, there's nothing we can do. Look at a site like GameFAQs, or Photobucket, or another site as Malgayne advertised - they are constantly slathered with wall-to-wall advertising for whoever paid them the most that week, complete with annoying interstitials and who knows what else. The bandwidth doesn't pay for itself - perhaps if we sucked more and had less traffic, we'd have no problem avoiding bouts of advertising such as this. If you can't accept the idea that it is helping us out where it counts, then just go on blocking the stupid ad campaigns and making us less money to keep the site running, knock your lights out. Have fun with your MySpace and AIM and anything else that aggressively shoves advertising down your throats. We'll be over here with our silly WoW database, still kicking ass.

I actually had the same experience as Skyfire.
Personally, I don't see the huge issue. It's not going to be like this forever, and it helps the website. The manpower and effort it takes to run this website isn't cheap. They're not sellouts for doing this, stop being ignorant.
Wowhead staff, keep up the good work. <3

To clarify my point, it's not the ad itself but how it's implemented. The onclick feature is a possible "wtf?" for anyone not expecting such a thing (aka, all of us),
especially
that right-click does the same thing on some browsers.
I understand the need for advertisements, and yes I do find it tasteful and relevant, but please, please do not do the click implementation again.

Exactly - don't stoop to their level. This site is different, and we users know it.
