If anyone is wondering, I'm making this thread as a breakdown of talents and why cookie-cutters have them.
Tanking
(0/46/10)
- Basic paladin tanking talents.
(0/49/12)
- Typcal build.
(0/46/15)
- PoJ build.
(0/51/10)
- Reckoning build.
(0/46/15)
- Single-target tanking build.
(0/47/14)
- 2/3 PoJ + Kings build.
(0/46/15)
- Imp SotC build.
(0/40/21)
- Sanct Aura build.
(10/41/10)
- Imp SoR build.
(0/41/20)
- Mine.
From basic tanking builds there are 5 basic floater points, which are usually put into
Blessing of Kings
,
Spell Warding
and
Improved Judgement
.
Shield Specialization
and
Ardent Defender
are semi-important Single-target tanking talents, however, they are crucial for multi-tanking, hence most paladin tanks take them for at least the trash.
Pursuit of Justice
is a highly debated talent, some people take it for the spell dodge, some for the speed increase, but 2/3 gives 10% which is more than
enchants and gems provide (8%)
.
Reckoning
is also a highly debated talent, as your pure avoidance gets better, it procs less, however, it still provides burst threat which many people enjoy.
Improved Judgement
is another form of popular burst damage/threat talent. However, in the long term with Judgement of
Righteousness
, it only provides a base of ~6 TPS and ~1 TPS per 10 spell damage.

Won't need it, I'm sure.
On a side note, I have Improved Retribution Aura because I run a lot of low level instances for my friends, and when you have 60 mobs beating on you at the same time, well, it adds up pretty fast.
Albeit, I have recently debated with myself to place one of the points in anticipation for raiding utility.

5/11/45 ret pve build.
i don't actually play a paladin but i was planning on making a horde one once i was done with my shaman (61 atm). at first i was planning on doing endgame stuff with him... but hey that's what my warrior's for, so i really just want to get as many toons to 70 before wotlk as i can :P
I forgot to mention that a friend of mine is a ret paladin and those are the specs he uses.

It goes very nicely with the 2PC T5 bonus.

I know, it's also amazing with one handed weapon specialization and crusade for passive and AW for active damage modifier is nice.

I will get around to discussing it, but seemingly from the protection overview, it seems I bit off more than I can chew as a casual project.

20/41 ret pvp build.
You don't need Imp.Devotion Aura when you always use Sanctity.
cookie cutter PvP ret build
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZVGkhMhZVfcth0uiIoz
but shouldn't a ret pally only use a shield of being kited by a hunter? if that's the case he can't block anyways, so wouldn't it make sense to switch to devotion aura until you get back in attack range to reduce the damage you take?
the only other time i can think of for using a shield is if you were guarding something in a BG, so that if and when you get jumped by rogues, you'll have extra armor to survive the initial stunlock. but you can't block, dodge, or parry while stunned, so once again i don't see the usefulness of redoubt in a pvp situation.
