When it comes to SC2, I do find it too fast-paced due to the ubiquity of rushing. My favorite SC2 moments are me and my friends' "pact games", where we agree not to attack main bases/natural expansions/etc until 20 minutes in. They always get very interesting. I never got into the Total War games, myself, but they look fun.
There is a lot more effort and thought invested in your empire when people are not like... zomg attack now now now now now...
I'd imagine so. I don't really play SC2 much anymore, mainly out of irritation that people always do the same few strategies (in my experience, anyway). Total War's somewhat similar to the Civilization series, right? Cause I love me some Civ.

Nah, the Troll face came a while before that. I don't even know what it's origin is, just that it's been around a while.

I know that my favorite game of that pretty much ended with my massive wall of Siege Tanks, Thors and Battlecruisers just wtfpwning their way across the map, with a cloud of auto-repairing SCVs following in their wake. Good times.
