Yes, 1000 years ago.
The Family yes...but having it all televised, and if it was one of the Celebroyalty in American, such as Donald Trump, Bill Gates, or any of the other rich influential types, there would have been a lot of Americans glued to their sets to watch it. Only reason that the Wedding got as much publicity as it did, is that William is in line to be a 'super power' if/when Charles dies.
The Royal family have little political power in Britain. They're more symbolic and ceremonial, as I said, and serve as figure heads. No, I think he got more publicity because he's not only in line to the throne (and in recent polls, only something like 15% of those polled want Charles as their next King), but also because he's Lady Diana's son and happens to be marrying a 'commoner'. It's like a real life Cindarella story, and happily ever after stories like that are always popular with the media.
