I really started liking knives that one time when I was playing a tabletop RPG game with one guy. He played a ranger, and I was the DM. The setting was fantasy of course, and I think the last adventure he had before that knife episode happened was something with harpies. They were kidnapping men from a village so he went to check what was going on, but didn't manage to save anyone. Anyway, at some point, he lost his knife (I think he may have thrown it on a fleeing harpy). And since I am such a nice DM, I decided it's gonna rain hard. He totally struggled to find some shelter. The first day he didn't mind the rain that much, but during the night I said he got a nasty cold and it had an impact on his stats, and told him it can get worse if he will be careless about how wet and cold he is and stuff. And then he struggled in the forest for five more days, and it was raining hard most of the time. :)
Oh the situations I set in front of him where he would beg for a knife and didn't have one. Every time he wanted to gut an animal he hunted for food (His other weapons were a bow and a spear. A spear does have a blade, but it is mighty impractical to cut with, and he didn't want to break it off.), or when he was trying to cross a swollen river, or build a shelter of straws and leaves. (The good thing about the hard environment was that he learned to use a lot of his non-combat ranger abilities very well, which was pretty much my goal.)
Then I had him meet a druid that healed him of his cold and gave him a knife. Ahh, good times from tabletop rpgs. Being a DM can be so amusing sometimes.

I make a Spot check for the knife that missed the harpy. I'll take 20, even.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##Squishalot##DELIM##

It actually hit the harpy, and she flew away with it. She also wasn't just an ordinary harpy, but kind of a local clan leader. I had her planned as a minor nemesis for him. I like recurring baddies, when it makes sense. When the player gets to kill someone who has been bugging him for a long time, rather than someone who he just met in a dungeon, it is a completely different impression.

Ah, that's alright then! And yes, it's much more satisfying when you've got recurring plot elements of any sort.

Pity I do not play anymore. Noone to play with. :-/
Eh, and that player guy I had has done so many silly things. He once came into a village which was almost entirely burned to the ground, except for the mayors house. The thugs have gathered the women in there and were raping them. Then my player buddy interfered. He managed to kill all the thugs (he sniped the sentries, stealthily killed a guard inside, and had to fight about five thugs head on, which would be a hard situation if he wouldn't catch them mostly unarmed), except for the leader. He let the women go, and then he... decided to interrogate the leader. Right on the spot. The leader didn't want to give any info. So my player decided to torture the leader >_>
And then a small military unit came in. They were sent from a nearby fortress and saw the fire. Imagine seeing an entire village burned, not a single soul in it, only in the mayors house you bump into two guys, one strapped to a chair and being tortured by the other. Heh. I mean I didn't have to send the militia in at just the worst moment, but complications are fun...
