Ouch... perhaps, the next time it shuts down, see if anything at the back of the tower is irregularly hot, that could be an indicator of something. I'm not a hardware expert, so I can't really help you... Sorry, man, that's no fun :(
trust me, I've done everything humanly possible for the past year and a half, including what you suggested.
(partial list: Formatting the hard drive, replacing the hard drive, updating the OS, reinstalling the OS, applying new thermal paste to the CPU, cleaning the whole thing, replacing the RAM memory, replacing the power source, updating the video-card drivers, ect ect ect)
Hi Rank, I just read about the problems you have been having and I thought to ask, have you tested the electrical outlet that your computer is plugged into? I know its a long shot but it is the only thing I could think of that you didn't mention trying. I actually had a similiar problem and it turned out the 50 year old electrical outlet in my wall was defective, $3 dollars for a new one and my problem was solved.

Hmm, I never considered that. For rank's sake, I hope he hasn't either, and that it's the problem, because it sounds easy enough to repair.

Nope, that's not it, I tried it at a friend's house and it shut down there too, and my friend's PC is plugged to the same outlet and she doesn't have any problems. As I said, I've tried everything and nada. =/ bummer.
And now the weather report: Today we have.................... a rain of sequins. >_>
