to Carimm and the other sudden righteous crusaders defending the motivations behind that ad:
1. indeed, wowhead is
THEIR
site, but it reached this popularity level through the users that posted tips, tricks, screens, content ! Look @ wardb now - although it has a nice interface it is empty, as wowhead was in the beginning...
2.
"Shut the hell up "
and moments later:
"The nerve of people who don't pay for a service, to complain about something."
etc... - you might want to reconsider what you wrote, you fall damn well in the same category Mr. Crusader.
3. "Everyone else QQ more please, I'm low on tears to clean my windows." - if this is an attempt to sarcasm or irony (even cheap)....well... you
FAIL

To those who are saying complaints have no merit and get over the ad, it is just an ad, etc...
No, I do not believe people who are complaining about the ad will leave and go to another site. People are happy with what Wowhead are doing.
Yes, I do believe running the site is a business and Wowhead team (ZAM Network) needs to consider options to make money to run the site.
What I also believe is the people who are using Wowhead are different than who are using Thottbot, Allakhazam, or other sites in ZAM Network. Just take a look at comments in quests, items and see how they are written, how they are rated and you will see the difference. There is a more loyal, above certain level fanbase that is using this site.
Hence I also believe treating each site at the same level and treating the audiences using the sites as one and the same is not a good way of marketing. What may work with Thottbot crowd will not with Wowhead's.
There are other ads on the site. Noone is complaining about those. It is the execution that is bothering people.
And yes, the ad is ugly as hell.

Wowhead is free to display whatever it likes, but if I worked at Blizzard, it might seem underhanded to me that an official
fansite
is displaying a prominent ad for a competing game on its front page.

Judging by 90% of the comments in this thread and elsewhere on the forums, I'm starting to doubt that.

Valid point.

I've been using wowhead for longer then i can remember, never really thought about the logistics of the site until i saw wowwiki's add....i thought it was a joke, but yeh turns out no one else was laughing. But TBH it didn't surprise me...this...well...this has certainly surprised me. I hold wowhead up with wowinsider and mmo-champ as sites i can respect...not only because they're so informative but because they have a passion for what they do and a self-respect that you don't see often.
With good reason as it turns out I can well understand the need for cash and still thoroughly enjoy the layout of this site and all it's done for the playerbase so wont be going anywhere else.
Just my thoughts.

It's like a PC fansite advertising Mac... very weird indeed but afterall it's just an advertisement. Wowhead needs to pay their bills :)

I actually felt sick, it's just tooooooo big, and it's WAR! (Tooooooo many Os? :P) Any MMO player worth their salt would have already brought then game, levelled up and lagged to sh1t while trying to siege a fort, quickly follow by ending their subscription!
And I thought the pop-unders were bad... Fortunately Adblock Plus had coped so far, until this!
In terms of features wowhead is great, the best, but remember it's still user based contributions that make the site what it is.
Gamer's are a cynical bunch!
Also, for the savvy, just image block...

Ahh, Adblock. How would I browse the internet without you to save me from horrible skins?
