I'd give it back because I may end up in a group with that player someday and karma is a dirty, dirty little girl...

I don't see anything wrong with contacting his guild. Send the GM a mail which explains what happened. It can't hurt to try at least.

In response to the original question. Assuming that I didn't catch it the mistake before the trade window closed, I would have returned the excess before you had a chance to ask for it back. A person's integrity is not transient, whether in real life or a MMO.
Ok, another question.
Thanks to wowarmory I tracked down Cloverfield (he's the only Cloverfield on Aman'Thul), would it be bad form to Email (within the game of course...Im no stalker) his guild leader and ask them to talk to Cloverfield and possibly get some of my money back? Or is that just a great idea?
As a guild officer I would want to know if one of my members was stealing from other players.
Yes folks this is theft no more no less
. So yes you should contact his guild leadership about it, and ask for the return of the entire over payment. Be prepared to actually talk to someone besides sending a game mail. You may or may not get satisfaction, but if you do not at least get a response, I would contact other officers in that guild.

i would given it back bcs doing like he did is bad for businness in future. Who wanna trade with some person who is so greedy he keeps money who he very well know was a mistake. That person becomes untrustworthy with doing businness with and if you spread the rumour around he will lose more than he earns from being a jerk and keeping all of the money.
on the other hand you should have looked. So the gm cannot force him to give back.
It is called ethics in trades.
The price you agree on is the price you pay.

3800g isn't worth ruining someone else's night, I'd give it back in a heartbeat.
The fact that he didn't means he's a dishonest person. Sucks hat you lose out on all your gold, sucks
more
that Blizzard would do nothing about it. Honestly, if you had logs of you agreeing to the price in chat before you did it, then they should restore your gold. If you give someone mats for an enchant and they bolt, Blizz will fix that and usually punish the person.
Just because the malicious intent of the other guy didn't happen until after-the-typo, its still malicious and dishonest...
What is a scam? A scam is the act of acquiring items or any other possession from another player through misinformation,
confusion
, or fraud.

Assuming you had both agreed on the original price, I don't understand how this does not fit the description. The fact that he put you on ignore proves he knows he's doing something wrong.
