Killing an innocent is murder.
Killing a criminal is not murder.
Making unsubstantiated arguments is a crime worse than murder.

Was that an irony success or an irony fail, Squish?

The concept of branding a person is intriguing but let's say you put it on their forehead, and they wear a Turban, you can't tell, and what exactly do you mean by exile?
Wouldn't prison achieve the same results with a lower chance of error?
Lets say you take every repeat felon in the USA, and you brand their entire face with a large stripe going diagonally across it. A large slash mark. Now let's say that if you are found in the country with the slash mark, you'll be flogged and kicked out. Then let's say that anyone who does business with a person that has a slash mark will get their own slash mark.
What do you think the crime rate would do? Do you think it would go up?
No... it would go down. And no one would die.

Define "does business with". With a broad enough definition, the crime rate would definitely go up.
Also, I would think the nature of the crimes would need to be taken into question before such branding. Say, repeat marijuana possession vs. repeat sexual assault. One is definitely more severe than the other, yet in most states, both are felonies and in your scenario would both be subjected to the same punishment.
For something like this to work, the law would have to be heavily defined, and many existing laws would need to be redefined. But, this goes without saying that I find expulsion from the country to be a rather severe punishment on it's own. This is the United States, the land of opportunity. What sort of opportunity do we give if those who make too many mistakes are automatically deported and barred from re-entry?

Success, of course. I even edited my post to make it that much clearer. How could you think otherwise of me? :P
I thought it was quite clever, anyway...

I was going to make a thread about this, but I found this one already made. Any new people want to chime in to get a current discussion going?
I don't think execution should be around anymore. I think the idea of punishment is misplaced. Rather than punish criminals, the goal should be to protect people against criminals. The can be accomplished by jail, probation, and by the fear of being fined, depending on the severity of the offense. I see nothing that execution can protect people from that life without parole cannot do. And maybe, just maybe, that person can live a productive rest of his life.

I hate the death penalty. We're living in a civilised century, come on. Killing people who kill people to make people that kill people understand killing is wrong is just plain out stupid.

For the most part, I would agree with the death penalty. There are some people who should just be put down. I'm not talking about Joe Drunk who beat a man to death in a drunken rage at the bar, but people like
Paul Bernardo
. To continue spending tax-payers' money to feed and shelter them is just wasteful. The problem arises from multiple factors:
1. Sometimes someone is convicted of a crime, and years later new evidence arises that proves they are innocent. When they have been in prison and go free, that's all well and good for them.
When they were executed years before
, then the people who put them to death are guilty of murder.
2. Political pressure to convict. Oftentimes, when a heinous crime is committed, the people want justice immediately. If someone looks like they might have done it, juries have been known to convict just because they want
someone
to pin the blame on. It's practically a lynching. When there's so much political pressure to convict, innocent people can get hurt, and once they're dead, they're dead, and you can't bring them back.
For anyone interested in the topic, I highly recommend watching
Penn & Teller's Bullsh&t
on the topic. Note that it's an entertainment program, so there are a lot of strawmen and bias, but they make several good points as well (in addition to being Pretty Cool Guys.)

I have always been pro-CP.
The death penalty is the most efective way to tell someone "don't do that."
If my friend come up and says we should rob a bank, I would say "F*ck no man, what if we accidently kill someone?"
His response without CP would be "So we get time in jail. Three square meals a day in all." (Which, admittedly, is better than my real life sometimes.)
His response with CP "Sh*t man, good point. We should hurry up and get to work so we get paid."
