A 2 minute fight has double Arcane Power, too :)
Considering my T7.5 gear I am not impressed with frost. It shines with FoF + Blizzard, the rest is Meh (mark the capital M). As an aggrivating factor, frost players on my server are pvp players. More specifically: they're the reason we loose Wintergrasp.

can someone explain the "3rd ghost" fingers of frost. Is it chaining your 2nd frostbolt with an icelance immediately after?
Yes. But it is a latency exploit, and can be hard to time.
If you miss the timing in as many as 1 in 10 times, this is actually a DPS loss.
I know 1/10 is right, but does anyone have a more accurate figure?
I played frost with FoF since it first came out in BC and did fantastic DPS. Unfortunately, other specs have surpassed it by large margins. I still do enjoy the spec, enough so that I keep it as my secondary spec.
TBH, missing it even once through an entire fight is a DPS Loss, but with the proper timing mods and alert system, it's VERY easy to hit it EVERY single time.
Step 1: Get Quartz timing bars.
Step 2: Get Event Alert
Step 3: Cast FrB until FoF procs.
Step 4: Notice how you get a FoF proc on your screen (thanks Event Alert) and get ready to hit the Ice Lance.
Step 5: WHILE you're casting the second FrB, spam hit the Ice Lance until it flys off ur finger tips.
Step 6: Go back to Step 3.
Do not spec for Brain Freeze, it is useless to you in PVE and IS a DPS Decrease.
You can get this 3rd hit with Ice lance, but this is not the "ghost hit".
Ghost Hit is a completely separate bug that seems affects Frostbolt only.
Edit: Ooo but wait! I just found a neat little update about Frb Ghost hit I didn't realize...
Good thing I always stayed above hit cap
. ;-)

Frost can put out dps both from AoE and icy veins coldsanp icy veins.
Arcane can put out more single target burst damage with the trinkets AB spam arcane power and heroism all lined up.
Fireball is the best sustained single target dps.
I prefer arcane myself as i like the burst control and the rotation. I said i play arcane because i like it bu ti have no problem respecing if dps is nnot high enough or if arcane get nerfed in a patch. Frost can raid Naxx because naxx was a joke.
Survivabilty- Frost has much more survivablity than arc or fb but it is at a dps loss. I prefer to pay attention and have a higher dps.
Dps- Mages aare supposed to dps thats what we do. 4K is respectable but as it has been said by respeccing and playing that spec correctly you will have an increase. I always try to max-out my dps that way i can pick up slack if the lower dps.
I believe what dread is saying, less than tactfully, is that frost is not at the same level so why would you hold yourself back. The answer you enjoy the forst spec. Im glad you found somethign you liek but much of the debate on this tread seems to be if frost the same as arc ffb or fb. The answer is no. Uldar's content is supposed to be much more challengeing so dps is critical. As for the frost mage on razorscale. Razorscale has a large AoE portion. Frost is great AoE as stated earier while fire has very little AoE so that could easily account for the damage gap. Also fire has LB which is a DOT thsi means that if forced to move or unable to attck a fire mage's Dps drops because of LB.
It is a game have fun. But understand that it is a guarantee that FFB, FB, and arc will be much higher on the meters than a frost is they are of comprable gear and skill.

raiding exploits?
Look up the definition of exploit.
in warcraft people commenly refer to a raid exploit as some kind of bug or something un-intentional during a boss encounter that can be done to make the encounter significantly easier, something Blizzard did not want for the encounter and usually fixes quickly... for example the disc priest bug on sarth, or in vanilla wow stacking people on the stump at the ZG tiger boss to force the second phase, yes people get banned for using these "exploits" there are many such examples
such as the dance-free bug for Heigan the Unclean that was fixed quite some time back? i didn't, however, know that people could get banned for using those exploits..

You're never going to have 0 spirit. Fingers of Frost or not, more crit directly translates to more frostbolts critting regardless of FoF, which in turn translated to a direct dps increase.
I personally don't raid frost, or particularly like its rotation. (...Rotation...) But from what i've heard it has good mana efficiency - which means you may as well use Molten Armor. Why use mage armor to increase your mana efficiency when you don't have a lot of mana problems? Why not use the armor that will be a dps gain, even if it will be just a marginal one for you?
