The speculation is fine. The part where you go wrong is to start the blame game with your speculation.
For you to speculate that a land war would not have brought as much loss to Japan as the atomic bombs did is naive, but not absurd. To then draw negative opinions about the US based on your speculation goes further, making you sound quick to judge. Without doing substantial ymore research than you have, you should probably refrain from the having more conversations about the subject.
Even if the atomic bombs were necessary to end the war, the US did use them to show off their power to the world. That's just good government.Getting back on topic: The US cannot act as a world police because it feels like it.
When can it act as police?
When it is asked to do so, let it be by the country they invade or by the UN.

I told myself I would leave once the UN were brought up. I refuse to discuss its virtues, or lack thereof.

Yeah saying the UN says its ok is about the same as saying if the US decides its fine, its fine. Either an exterior power can decide or it can't.

Not really. The UN is that exterior power, because it is not only formed by US representatives, but from around the world, so the decision won't be made aiming at the US's goals.

That's stupid.
When talking about international relations, the UN is going to come up, no matter what. It is supposed to be the ruling power of the world, and it makes decisions about what is right or wrong.

UNit makes decisions about what is right or wrong.
Wanna rethink this? Or.... do you really believe this?

I did always found it funny that you could 'legally' invade a soverigon nation.
Im not exactly the most pro american (or pro military for that matter), but I find it strange (and somewhat hypocritcal) that over the years when various conflicts around the world were left without American interferance that people asked why they didnt step in. But when they do step in that people ask why they are interfering. Can't have it both ways.
End of the day though, the world does unfortunatly need a 'world police' and if not america, then who?
The world. But whatever country is going to send his forces to help a foreign nation, it needs to do so authorized by the UN, or the foreign nation in question.

Lemme explain. I may not agree with what the UN says all the time, but whatever it says, it's the way it is. If the UN authorizes an American invasion of said country, it's gonna happen, and is considered right by the international community.

I like to think that I have a little more control over what happens in the world than that.
An extreme example:
Let's say the UN says that the US is now annexed by a world nation, and that my kids are being taken away from me and sent to a political 'reform' school in switzerland. What should I do?
A) The UN said it, so that's the way it is.
B) Write a letter to ask nicely for my rights.
C) Pick up a gun, and start a revolution, because the UN DOESN'T DECIDE WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG.

You're putting up a ridiculous situation. You seem to think the UN is basically the US talking another way. We have around 130 countries in the UN, all with their opinions. Something as you said would never be approved.

UN DOESN'T DECIDE WHAT IS RIGHT AND WRONG.
And who does?

@MyTie
: Let's say the US wants to invade Ireland. If that action is denied by the UN, it's gonna be considered wrong by the international community. If said action is considered by the majority of the UN that it is the best way to protect Human Rights and the best thing to be done for the people of Ireland, it's gonna get accepted and considered right by the majority of the international community.

Just because the UN says an action is wrong does not mean the international community is against it. You fail to see the UN as a large talking head that fails every day to achieve the necessary action needed to alleviate situations.
"Diplomacy without arms is like music without instruments."
- Frederick the Great
You fail to see the UN is formed by the countries, and the world is full of situations. If the UN isn't solving problems, it's our own governments fault, for being too greedy. Once again, it's not personal. It's just business.

A sad reality is, in order to have peace you have to squash out those that despise it
You don't seriously believe people have wars for the sake of having wars, do you?

If you read the entire post, you would see I'm arguing the contrary.
No you don't. At no point in that post do you give another possible reason for a war.
Apart from Nuclear Arms. Which don't count in this case because those themselves are used only for warfare.
