You elect, either from a Battlemaster in a capital city, or through your PvP tab, to join a queue. You then have to wait until enough players from your region join the queue for the same Battleground, and when there is enough, one will start. You will be given the choice to teleport into the battle wherever you are, and will now be returned after the battle to wherever you where, which is handy.
The Quest you have will most likely be a Daily "Call to Arms" Quest. The purpose of these is just to secure victory in the specified Battleground. You and your team will have to fight the opposing faction to do so - this can range from being extremely easy to nigh on impossible depending on your team.
In most PvP Battlegrounds there are players who have elected to dedicate everything about their character to being functional, or even uber PvP killing machines - these are commonly referred to as "twinks", although some people contest that at higher levels, they are not technically "twinks". Most people use this as an umbrella term for a purely PvP character though.
The number of Twinks on a factions side can make all the difference in a Battleground - they are generally very very dangerous, and hard to kill, and know what they are doing. They will know how to kill you most effectively, and how to secure victory in that specific BG. It is strongly advised when fighting in BG's that as a matter of course, you stay close to your allies and
do your job
. If you can find and kill your counter class, then good. If you can heal one of your best fighters to keep him killing the enemy longer, do so. If you have some other special skill that allows you to fulfil a role, then make use of it. An example would be Druids capturing flags in Warsong Gulch - they are very fast, sneaky, and durable, and so fit this role well.
Over time you will gain "Marks of Honor" and "Honor Points" from fighting in BG's, as well as reputation with BG Factions. The rewards from PvP usually require both parts of the PvP currency, so, for example, if you want to buy a Epic PvP Ring from your PvP Vendor (found in a capital city, Storwind for Alliance, Orgrimmar for Horde), you would need, say, 15300 Honor Points and 40 Arathi Basin Marks of Honor (example only).
Honor is gained relatively slowly especially at lower levels. At best, in Alterac Valley, with a full clear and win, you may make around 1500 - 2000 Honor, but this is rare. Marks of Honor are awarded based on winning or losing - three are given for a win in that BG, one is given for losing.
Hope this helps.

My suggestion: Don't PvP until level 70ish.
At lower levels such as 19-29, there are players called 'Twinks'. These are alts of level 80s that specifically gear themselves to fight in that bracket, and will kill a normally geared players very quickly.. then teabag the corpse...repeatedly.
Many players leave these BGs with a sour taste in their mouth towards PvP, wait till a higher level, when you have all your skills, and don't have to contend with godmode players.
Rewards in battlegrounds are earned by fighting in matches. You will slowly accumulate honor points which can be used along with marks awarded at the end of the BG to buy items from special vendors. A typical item costs 20 marks and 1000 honor at your level. 3 marks are earned at the end of each battleground match you win, 1 for each one you lose. Honor is rewarded for killing players and finishing the match. It generally takes about 10-15 matches per item.
The rewards at the 20-29 level of battlegrounds are neglible, if you intened to fully level your character you will wear through these items very quickly.
