I'm more than sure that levelling a priest from the beginning has become far different to back when I did it so can't speak for the lower levels.
All I know is that the higher you get, the easier it seems to be. I'm having a much easier time levelling through the 70s as shadow than I ever did up to the 40s.
Did try the holy spec mentioned above through the lower levels, and just didn't like it so switched to shadow.
Try both out and see what you like, you can always change it if it's not working for you :)
And yes, as mentioned above, pick your zones wisely. A lot of people tend to have trouble in the Ghostlands, and choose The Barrens instead. But again do what you enjoy :)

Ok, I read abit and checked the talent calculator.
What about a Disc/holy build for levelling? is it still doable? How much slower would it be? It feels much more appealing to my playstyle :)
I messed a bit with the talent calculator and I came up with this:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#bVcbuhhiMIsfcRtfxZG:AbdzMc
First points would go to Spirit tap, then all the way till penance then the talents in holy.
Anything I should change?
I believe a healing spec takes around twice as long to kill a mob then shadow. Something in the lines of shadow priest kill mobs in 5 seconds and Holy Priest 9 seconds.
It's doable and when you instance a lot and do quest you won't notice the difference. But when you are grinding and you switch specs then you notice the big difference.
Also Disc has the nasty habit of having a lot of cooldown spells. Spell misses can be vital.
I do something in the lines of:
Power Word: Shield -> Penance -> Shadow Word Death -> Holy Fire -> Mind Blast
And if a mob survives that you need to smite it!

Don't you open with Holy Fire rather than Penance?
Anyway, I currently am disc/shadow specced. In shadow I can destroy a thing on sight in less time that it takes to write this. However when I'm disc and have to deal with a mob, I've seen that you take a lot more damage, which leads to your, even improved, shield to fade in a couple of hits from the mob. Killing on the other hand is slower, Penance is not really a good damaging spell after all, even if every bolt crits, it is still 3x600 = 1800 damage. A Mind Blast crit in shadowform is more than 5k. A Mind Flay crit is 3k damage.
So disc is less survivability, less damage, and I have to drink - I don't have to as shadow. Maybe I just can't play it well, but... I'll go with leveing as shadow until 80.

Thats the famous Borrowed Time bug/trick. Penance doesn't consume Borrowed Time. Shadow Word: Death doesn't consume Borrowed Time. So thats 3 spells (with Holy Fire) that get the 25% haste from Borrowed Time.
It still works today, just tested it out. ;)

Yeah, I know about the trick :-) But I still prefer open with a casting time spell then use Penance, just so that the mob isn't already alerted to your presence when you cast Penance. Everyone has his own playstyle I guess.
I never thought about using it with SWD though. I'll have to try it out someday.

Owh well, PWS helps both against push backs and damage. I never get hit during soloing, but I also got some good gear. I don't think it matters a lot, but making dps in a haler spec faster does help. You save like a second per mob. At 15 mobs it's 15 second.
Shadow will always be the fastest and I wish I could spec shadow. :<

Nothing. Shadow becomes pew pew when you get Shadowform, this is level 40. Before, it is a bit tedious to level a priest, and disc or holy spec can indeed be faster levelers at that point.
What I was doing is PW:S first, then Mind Blast, SW:P, and Mind Flay to death. I'm not a big fan of wands, I had bought a huge stock of water and drank rather than used wands. As I leveled, I had to drink less and less, until a certain point around level 60 when I had no longer to drink at all.

I got a 49 that duel speced shadow, and discipline, I like discipline more for soloing, use less mana, and other then the rare miss I do about the same dmg, but with constant mana regain, and a better bubble.
I normally only pop shadow for groups for the group benfits, and the extra hit.
Basic pull for me goes Bubble, holyfire, mindblast, shadow word pain, smite, smite, then mindblast of holy fire again if needed, but at that point any yellow is dead.
Thing I like is if I get too many in a pull the bubble not only takes more, but bounces back some of there dmg, and in the reduced drained soul and you got a pretty usable solo spec.
PS Also note I build both specs up so if I jump into a bg, either one works, making my shadow have a little less bite since I went for silence. Of course at 50 might change my mind with vamperic touch
