before this I have just had mid lvl priests and one 70. Doing old heroics mainly, well I feel the need to lvl them again and I want to progress into raids. Any tricks of the trade I should know/ are you guys doing alright numbers wise(amount healed).
Tricks? don't let ppl die? That's my trick.
Your other question (re: how much we heal) is situational. I'll heal more if there's more damage being done to my raid.

raid healing is obvs dominated by tree's lets face it, but we are more single target people or the guys fixing the burst dmg from aoe's the way I have seen it. I guess just any advice for the new guy lol
That isn't true. I'm the top raid healer in my guild by a huge margin over the trees. A good Circle priest will NEVER be beat on Raid healing.
Holy is fantastic for AOE Healing. Disciplines is good for single target healing.
My advice to you is to not pigeon-hole our class.

LOL?
PoH and CoH dominate in raids right now.
Tips:
1. Use CoH everytime 3+ people need healing. Even overheal hits will proc Surge of Light for a free instant cast flash heal.
2. Preemptively cast PoH when you know lots of damage is incoming.
3. Renew heals for a healthy chunk of change (as holy) and can crit and proc holy concentration; don't neglect using it.
4. Keep PoM up on the tank.
5. Pick up Grid or healbot so you can heal your raid effectively.
6. Learn to use mouseover macros; they will speed up your reaction time amazingly.

Hey Razz think that would have all been great advice if he were in raids, but he isn't yet.
My troll-alarm is starting to ring.

Ah, I see. :D I thought he wanted advice for raiding since he would be there soon. Hehe,
Tree alarm
, more like it! Don't get me wrong you trees out there (I used to play my druid as resto, now I just heal on my priest... too many healing specs for priests to ever get bored!), trees can do great in raids, I just think that for Priests have the upper-hand for aoe-age, atm. :D

Actually, I've seen some holy priests put out some sick numbers with our HoT,
Renew
It used to be ok, but recently it has gotten a buff if you spec and glyph right. I've seen some holy priests putting out some big numbers for heals with Renew in 25 man raids. As in, it is 3rd only to CoH and PoH.
The reason being are the bonuses it gets from these talents & glyph:
Improved Renew
Empowered Renew
(this can crit on the initial heal and proc
Holy Concentration
Glyph of Renew
Raid-wide damage is massive and so severe, hots aren't getting over-written as much as they used to.
Anyway, I digress. The class has changed a lot. And just so you know, Discipline is also a viable pve build for healing now (in addition to being the best pvp tree), mostly used for tank healing. Very preventative focus with how it buffs PW:S and has
Divine Aegis
.
Enjoy your priest, it's very fun these days :D
