Divine Shield makes you lose aggro, yes.
Divine Protection does not. That is your shield wall.

Divine Shield drops aggro for as long as it is up. When the shield goes down, your threat is restored.
Using Divine Shield/Sacrifice is very situational while tanking. Some fights, such as XT-002, have periods where the main tank does not have to worry about threat while there is AoE being dropped on the raid (in this fight, the example would be Tympanic Tantrum). In these situations, Divine Sacrifice is of viable use. In others, such as Ignis, there is no equivalent downtime and popping Divine Shield and Divine Sacrifice to neutralize AoE damage would result in the boss turning its attention onto other members of the raid.

It's also awesome for off tanks in fights where they only occasionally have a job to do.

The buff to sacred shield from divine guardian is nice too.

Instead of popping a DS try popping a
Divine Protection
as this does not drop aggro or nerf your damage but only protects 50% damage.

When you say 'restored', do you mean it goes back to the level that it was previously? I was under the impression that it wiped you from the aggro table completely.

Divine Shield doesnt affect your threat in anyway really.
Though a mob will not attempt to strike a target that is immune while there are targets that arn't.
Unless forced to do so through taunt mechanics (havn't tested this for a while but i think it still works).
