you need not to worry about that.
just put mana tide when you are going oom and the fight looks like its gonna go on for some time.however,if you have a lot of problems, try to get a class/spec that provides replenishment.(as far as i remember survival hunters can, cant remember the others now)

I think the first thing is to get yourself a good healing add-on like Clique or Healbot or Quick Heal. The hardest part in healing, I think, is quickly managing all your spells and an add-on that streamlines that process will be a life saver (literally!).
The second is to become familiar with how much your heals heal for so you can assess when to fire off a heal so as to not burn mana over-healing. Also pay attention to how much damage team mates are taking in each fight as this helps with your gauging of when to cast.
In addition to the basic Lesser Healing Wave/Healing Wave/Chain Heal trio, you've got Riptide, Tidal Force, Nature's Swiftness and Cleanse to work with and worry about as well. Be on top of Cleansing diseases, poisons and other debuffs and learn what the other abilities do so to know when to use them.
These are things I'm finding as I get back into playing Resto. Gear is pretty much secondary to learning how to use and manage your healing arsenal. Gear will make you more effective but you need to know spec first and it's a lot to learn particularly if Resto is your off-spec and you don't spend all your time in it.

I don't really have much to add that hasn't been said.
A class with replenishment (or something similar) may help,
SPriests
,
Ret Pallies
,
Frost Mages
and
Survival Hunters
.
There's also the Druid ability
Innervate
. Right now, it is a VERY minor amount of mana you would get restored by it (But still, every little bit counts). In the next patch, according to the patch notes, it will restore mana based on the Druid's base mana, which will be a lot better for us.
Also there are some nice somewhat passive heals
Pallies
,
SPriests
and
Feral Druids
will give out to help give you a tiny bit more of a buffer.
Small thing to point out, a Paladin's
Blessing of Wisdom
and a Shaman's
Mana Spring Totem
are mutually exclusive, you can't have both of them on you at the same time. They're both equally powerful, but you should have
Restorative Totems
. Paladins have
Improved Blessing of Wisdom
, but it's a Holy talent. If you're doing 5mans as a healer, any Paladin you're with should NOT have this talent.
When the Paladin is passing out blessings, tell him not to waste his reagent with Wisdom on anyone in the party, since yours is better.
Just for future reference, once you get into 10mans and if you do have 2 Paladins in your raid, they should be giving you Kings+Wisdom and you should be dropping Healing Steam Totem instead of Mana Spring. (Or drop Cleansing totem, where relevant)
Always try to sneak a drink whenever you can. If you can't rely on there being a mage in your party, try heading to Dalaran and tip a mage some gold to summon you some. Take a few sips between pulls.
If you're having trouble with mana still, I may consider getting rid of your
Glyph of Riptide
for
Glyph of Water Mastery
.
Other than that? Make sure you're healing efficiently. Don't bother throwing a Healing Wave on somebody missing a few hundred HP. It's okay to let somebody die a little bit before healing them. (A problem too many healers have. They'll throw their flash heal on the player missing 3 HP instead of letting them get down a reasonable amount and throw their greater heals. Big waste of mana.)

To the OP: Honestly, there's really no minimum requirement for runs until you hit heroics. Everyone else is running around in the quest reward/crafted tat they've picked up, and you're no different.
The best advice I can give is learn the instances. Once you know how many mobs to expect in any given pull, where you should stand, the type (and amount) of damage going around etc, you'll be able to anticipate which heals you need to use and who they're going to go to.
If you haven't already got it, you might try totemic focus. If mana is the issue this will help more than imp. healing wave (which you're probably not using a lot anyway). Pretty handy while you're learning which totems you need for different group compositions and for the different fights.
Also, if your groups want healing, make sure they're standing where you want them to. Caster/ranged groups on you, melee nice and close to the tank. Unless there's a very good reason for them to spread out, keep them together and drop chain heals on them. Two clicks to heal the whole group? Yes please :)
Last thing - if you haven't got it, get the
glyph of water mastery
. It's definitely worth it, especially if you have the
glyph of water shield
for it to cuddle up to.

One question though, on the Etheral boss in VH, is there a reliable way to get your totems out? I was going to try putting them near the center of our kite path but wasn't given much of a chance.
I usually just drop them in between his portal and the underwater ramp, but right up against the wall so they're more likely to still be in range when we go up the stairs and across the top.
Probably not the best way to do it, but you can usually afford the GCD if you find you need to be taking a certain totem with you as you move and have to keep putting it down in a new place.
