Fun DK idea

The timing on this would have been better pre-WOTLK, but it seems like a fun "what-if":
People complain about there being too many DK's. This idea wouldn't inherently lessen the number of them, but it would make it so that a player couldn't indiscriminately start one on any realm at 55.
What if a player could only make a DK by sacrificing a level 55 character? Imagine a quest chain starting in, say, Western Plaguelands, available at 55. The chain would be completely optional, and would lead to the character's death at the hands of the scourge, and resurrection at the hands of Arthas. The DK starting zone quests could be identical to now.
I feel like it would give more weight to the quests where the toon kills innocents and a member of his race. It would mean something when the NPC asks if your character remembers being a hero of the Horde/Alliance.
Logistically speaking, the character would keep his name and race, obviously. Talent trees would be wiped, and even attributes could be reset to the standard DK starting ones now.
Essentially everything would be the same as it is now, except instead of creating a DK from scratch, an already existing character could become one. Maybe the quest would only be available at 55, and not after 58?
I don't know. Thoughts? Ideas?

That's the concept behind being a "hero class" and where your DK came from. Your DK used to be a champion of the Alliance/Horde, reached the level of being a hero for your kingdom, and then died. The Lich King likes to defile heroes and converts you into a unholy irony.
Your character has a history, that's how the person in the "portable" towards the end of the DK intro knows who you are.
Having to give up a character you just leveled to 55 to play a DK just isn't a feasable idea for an MMO, though. Most casual players wouldn't want to level up that same class again just to play it, and some might come to find out they just lost their character for a class they don't like to play. Maybe pen and paper, but it has no place here.
I believe this was Blizzard's original plan for DKs, but they scrapped it before WOTLK launched.
Yeah, during the time of the hype about WotLK... everyone was basically saying that this was going to be the idea of Blizzard. Like some other MMOs I know of... you would be upgrading your class from whatever you are now... to become a death knight.
Rumors that I heard doing that time was that only Paladins can be DKs (going with the lore)... while other hero classes would be available later on. Suggestions were Warlocks would be Demon Hunters, Mages would be Wizards, etc...
So yeah, this idea has already been explored...
