Should have locked the thread when it got out of control in the middle there, but fortunately you seem to have steered yourselves back into safe waters. Can't look away from this thread for a minute.
I think the fundamental disagreement can be summarized in three questions:
Does the government have the obligation, or even the right, to prevent its citizens from harming themselves?
Will the legalization of cocaine cause an increase in cocaine usage, which most (though not all) people agree would be a bad thing?
Will an increase in cocaine usage cause an increase in
other
crimes—which almost all people agree would be a bad thing?
I think that people can disagree on all three of the above points and not be fools. And that, I think, is the best way to end a debate.

I discussed the issue with my wife today. She pointed out that most income for drug trafficing comes from the addicts, not the first time users. So, if the addicts could go to a lawful safe drug clinic to get thier fix, the economy for gangs would be debased. BUT she took it a step futher and pointed out that most addicts started using at a party socially. Since the economy of the drug lords would be gone, and it wouldn't be available on the streets, you wouldn't find it at parties. In the end, it would lower addiction rates.
My wife's sense of logic stuns me. She's so smart.

Since when can you not get store bought drugs from a party?
Edit: I mean it wouldn't affect whether or not you found it at parties, although it'll reduce the likelihood of it appearing at younger ages.

He commented on the best way to end it, not saying it was over.

That's not very logical, whatsoever. If the gov't allowed it only to be used within a clinic, the underground market would still have a viable reason for being around. They would be there for those who want to use the drug outside of clinics and in social gatherings.
This would only help the drug lords stay in business.
My exact thinking in regards to MyTie's proposed idea, and the basis of my arguments.
You two missed the point of drug money incoming from those who are addicted. If you take that away, I couldn't see an entire underground market catering to a few parties, especially if the punishments for doing so are exile and tattooing.
You see.. .you have to
read
. It really helps in these discussions.
@Hungryshadow - The new point brought up is the lack of new addicts, since the supply of addicts comes from social occasions and the money comes from people already truely addicted. Take away the accicts, then stop funding the social occasions as well. This is new, and worth discussing. Please don't come into a discussion to say: "Guys, stop talking about it."

Having cocaine help centers =/= legalizing cocaine. I think you need to rephrase your argument, there are already ways for people to legally obtain marijuana, but its illegal to have marijuana without a government license. Legalizing cocaine would allow anyone to get it, whereas if you just built more cocaine help centers, it'd help crack addicts ease out of their addiction.
