I did this early on for kicks (also, I have a young child that likes waking up at inopportune times keeping me from even 5's let alone raiding). It really can be a blast, but know that you're gimped in this spec for doing proper levels of damage with an at-level group.

That's a very loose idea on a spec I'd mess around with. some points could go either way, but the main focus is to make sure your pet has lots of buffs to stam, armor, healing, and focus.
For a pet, I'd recommend a Crocolisk, since the family ability (especially with Longevity) is pretty handy to make sure all mobs stay glued to your pocket tank.

That's a decent spec outline for a pet to perform in the role you're seeking. If you're hitting much lower level places, you can probably move the points from Great Resistance to Spiked Collar for slightly faster kills.
Others should chime in on ways to tweak my specs provided or give alternate courses to take. It has been a while since I played my hunter actively for more than fishing or gathering, and I'm somewhat out of practice.

Well start off by going bm and getting the exotic pet talent and any talents that specifically benefit your pet. I would choose a Devilsaur as a pet, they can dish out good damage and take a hit at the same time, but you may have problems on bigger pulls with aggro if you dont like switching your pets target every now and then. Or you could go with a gorilla, bear, turtle(meh), or other tank like pets.
