Am I the only one like this? I'm finding I just would rather gather everything to sell it for gold to buy the couple of pieces I actually need for my toon from someone else who wasted their time on a crafting profession.
crafting profs are not practical or profitable until Northrend. but i did enjoy leveling BSing (i leveled slowly with some friends), so i spent my non-xp-earning time making matching sets like Green Iron armor. I really enjoyed that (although wearing the full set was not optimal.... it just looked good).

Crafting profs don't make money until Northrend, no, however they can be VERY helpful while leveling (especially if you level the appropriate gathering prof. with them).

Everyone seems to be forgetting the perk of having two gathering professions.
It's not about the little bonuses they give, it's that you'll have so much gold you'll be able to buy all the epics and whatnot that you could want. That in itself is nothing to laugh at.
Whatever tiny perk you're missing from a crafting profession is easily made up by just buying lots of great gear and consumables to boost you directly.

I have found lately that the markets are so saturated with gathered mats, using a crafting profession to buy up the mats and make something is more enjoyable, easier, and more profitable.
I recently did a blitz run of leveling inscription, and the herbs are so common in the AH it wasn't worth the time to gather them vs. just buying them.
I have max mining, herbalism and skinning on my various chars, but I rarely actually take the time to gather with them- my enchanting and inscription more than make enough to keep up the difference, and take a lot less time.
The other difference is in the deposits with mats vs. final products- most glyphs cost very little to list, so even if they sell slowly I don't lose much. Leathers, ores, and high level herbs cost a few gold to list- if someone undercuts me and they don't sell, I lose a lot more of the total sale price.
