Expect to spend all your time gathering reagents, grinding money for the repair bills that is inevitably in being an undergeared prot pally in raids.
Expect that people'll expect you to be the most geared person in a raid.
Expect to look forward to lots of repair bills.
Expect the worst, hope for the best.

You can be a raider and spend 3 hours a week or be a raider and spend 30 hours a week (or 60 like some!) on it - time and dedication is flexible, because the word "raid" is so flexible. Raiding OS10 / 25 takes half hour a week of actual raid time, once you're geared up from heroics (which can take as little as a week or as much as 6 months depending on how much you spend on it!). If you wanted to be seriously making progression in Ulduar for example, you'd be at the high end of the spectrum, if you just wanted to foray into the smaller 10 mans, not that much time required at all.
As for gear, well to start raiding you're going to want the Superior achievement usually, with a few purple items also. You'll want to get your reputation as high as you can with WotLK factions but start out with those that have purple gear or enchants that are most relevant to your class/spec. You can do this with quests + grinding hcs. You'll want to do all the hcs, many of them multiple times in order to farm the blues and purples that are best for you - and then spend the emblems on yet more gear. A hc can be as quick as 15 mins or as slow as 60-90 minutes or even more with a group that wipes a few times. You're going to wait to grind dailies for cash (or your profs), in order to properly gem and enchant your gear - and maybe buy a few purple craftables too. Nothing annoys me more than seeing someone who has obviously gone to the effort of getting exalted with a faction and then didn't spend 100 gold on enchanting the item, don't know about others though, but it affects who I would raid with.
Add to that a bit of research of your role and the tactics and you'll be ready for a raid. Whether this takes you two weeks or 6 months really depends how much time you put into it.
It's a really broad spectrum question with no good answer unless you give more information really.
