From what I have read on various websites - here and Elitistjerks
the destro rotation starts with COD. (not all builds have this but many do)
can someone explain - or point me to a thread or forum or anything that explains the usage of COD? does it really add to overall dps?
Is COD really the best choice in a destro rotation?
Thanks ahead of time.
Edit: Thanks for the responses they have been very helpful

It depends on how long your target is alive.
If you expect a boss to be alive for 4 minutes and 30 seconds, you will ideally use four Curses of Doom and one Curse of Agony at the end for maximum curse damage.
If you're fighting a boss that will go down before 60 seconds have passed, you of course choose CoA so you get some damage done from that global cool down you just spent, which could have been a 10k incinerate crit.

affliction locks don't want to use CoE, they get far more out of CoA. destro is the best warlock spec to apply CoE
balance druids and unholyDKs do it better than any warlock build, particularly unholyDKs.
destro uses CoD because it's very high DPET (damage-per-execute-time). you cast it once every 60seconds for massive damage. it's totally worth the single GCD to get that much damage. while the DPS may be similar to CoA, CoA requires several GCDs which lowers your damage from destro's fire sources.
so, CoD is an excellent use of a 1.5seconds time frame but it doesn't make up a significant proportion of destro's output. as such if the raid wants a debuff curse like CoE or CoW, destro is an excellent choice.
(on a side note - chantress, multiple deep demo locks worries me. after the one with the best gear has applied the de/buffs (DP and ISB) the others are wasted and would be better of choosing a spec with better output. affliction is a very good choice - i think it's jutst your locks ^^)
