Seals used to be a 2 minute buff that was off the GCD
Hell, it used to be a 30 second buff once upon a time. I called it weaving as well, and never actually heard anyone refer to it as twisting until this thread, but meh, they both get the point across. Prot Paladins used to do this too, but I forget which seals they would switch between. My guess would be corruption/wisdom though.

I only started after Wrath's release, but I don't remember seals ever being off the GCD. o.O Was there a point after the 30sec -> 2min change where they were off the GCD?
If they were off the GCD the whole time right up until the 30 minute buff, why did all the descriptions of 969 involve replacing certain spells with the seal cast as they wore off?

Such cluelessness from some replies, tsk tsk. The whole seal twisting came from time when ret paladin dps 'rotation' considered of CS/J, some consecrates and chugging mana pots like a mofo. Some blood elves came up with the idea of changing the seals just before melee swing connected, taking advantage of lag issues in the hit calculation. The end effect was, if your timing was devilishly accurate, getting a melee swing with a SoB proc at worst, or a melee swing, a SoC proc and two SoB procs, off both melee and SoC. The damage was awesome if executed right. Only a select few people could get it going consistently tho, and there was much discussion if the loss of sanity from this action was worth the increased dps.

oh god i remember the amazing days of 30 second seals... i was only like lvl 35 back in the day but i'd go into stromgarde, pull 2-3 elites, do seal of light, judgement, seal of light, go grab a snack and come back in 10 minutes.

Seal twisting was also used in pvp to get a seal of command proc and a seal of justice proc off of the same swing. If you had a swing timer, and you could tell at the start of your swing what it looked like when seal of command procced, you could switch to seal of justice before your white damage hit. The seal of command proc happened before the swing, seal of justice happened after. So some people were able to get a huge seal of command hit with a stun at the same time.
Thats what real seal twisting is.

Along that same line, it was used so that you could start with SoJ, get a stun, and either with quick fingers or a macro, pop SoCom and Judge within 3 seconds for the burst damage from the guaranteed crit off from the SoCom judgement. This worked well against casters in pvp (stun to interrupt casting, Judge for the nice burst damage). Even with diminishing returns on stuns, you could usually drop a clothy before it became an issue.
Peace
