Is any class worth it in the long run? Its your game, play what you want, read the character descriptions, they tell you what you need to know.

Yes, it is. Whether or not we're in good shape now, Blizzard DOES care about Warlocks. The pendulum is just in a negative side right now.
Go ahead and make one if that's what you want. Just make sure that it's what you really want.

you have to excuse the people who told you that you should experience it yourself to decide, but they are not wrong, it is a personal choice after all. yes to me being a warlock is the only reason i play this game, and i don't think i would be still playing it if there was no warlocks. simply because i love how the class works. other people feel the same about their classes. so no one is wrong here.

I certainly think that they are.
They can push out some serious DPS if you have decent gear, spec, and rotation. Be warned, though, Warlocks are pretty tricky to get the hang of when it comes to Raiding and/or PvP. I'd say there are more Warlocks with terrible gear/specs and dps than there are of Death Knights and everyone says that all Death Knights are noobs. Honestly, it just depends on what YOU want. If I like something, it doesn't mean you're going to enjoy the same thing.
If you want a caster/clothy that can summon a variety of differet pets to do different things, and you enjoy placing DoTs on your enemy and slamming them with either firey destruction spells or shadowy afflictions spells, then a Warlock is what you're looking for. They use reagents for a lot of their spells/abilities, but the reagents are obtained in such an easy way, it's almost pointless for Blizzard to make them a requirement.
They bring a bunch of things to the table when it comes to raiding also. Their pets can either buff the entire raid with a Stamina buff or with an Intellect/Spirit buff. They can create Healthstones for everyone in the raid via soulwell or soulstones for an important raid member such as a Healer or a Tank, so that they can instantly resurrect themselves from the dead to continue fighting or to res everyone after a whipe to avoid the hastle/wait of the long run back. And most of all, they can create a summoning stone in which you can summon party members. This is my favorite aspect of the Warlock, summoning. Sure, it can get annoying constantly being relied on to summon, but it's our job and even if you're doing crappy dps, at least you're wanted for one thing, summoning. :)
But really, if you spend some time and learn about raiding/gear/specs/rotation with your Warlock, you won't be doing crappy dps and the entire raid will love you for you and not just your summoning abilities, heh. My Warlock was the last of my characters to gear up and it honestly took me about a week and a half to get some gear/learn a good spec and rotation, now i'm doing 4.3K dps in 25mans and about 4K even in 10 mans. I'm not even fully geared yet either, i need an epic wand and to replace some 10 man epics with 25 man epics and i'll be fully geared up to Ulduar.
And finally, for PvP, yes they are squishy if you don't know how to CC (crowd control). In BGs every class is going to die super easily if there's 10 enemies on you. Warlocks just die faster due to their material of gear, cloth. Really, you should only base PvP on 1 v 1 duels or Arenas. We do REALLY well in Arenas. Fear FTW. People just need to open their eyes. If Blizzard buffed our pets survivability, I think we'd be perfect. We have all the burst damage/CC we need, just need our pets to not die and we won't die.
I hope this will help you decide.
I mentioned all of the abilities and what they did/definitions in case you weren't aware of them. You didn't post any other information, so I don't know if you have a well known idea of WoW or if you're just starting out.
Either way, take care!
