Anybody use a build with FG + Affliction talents?

I am just starting grind from 70-80. I have level 70 quest reward gear (crap) so I have been reading into using a FG spec for less gear dependency. Most FG specs that I know of go into destro but I like affliction, and aim to respec affliction down the road.

Anybody do this? Anyone got a spec? I can make one from talen guide but it gets hunfry so I would like suggestion on whats skippable. Id like to get FG then go as far down affliction as possible.

Let me narrow down the question..

I want SL and FG. Should I sacrifice demonology top end talents for 5/5 shadow mastery or sacrifice 5/5 shadow mastery for say demonic tactics + 2/3 improved demonic tactics.

This is for a leveling build with quest item gear.

in fact, the spec your suggest (SiLi/FG) is a known levelling spec and one i used myself. it gained an amount of fame because it's the spec that was used by the first person in the world to get to 80 (not just the first lock, the first person!).

it works very much like a full affliction build in that it works best against large groups of mobs on which you cast all your instant DoTs. in fact, single mobs will die at about the same speed as whole groups so it's in your interest to pull groups. the main difference between full aff and this build is that you can also solo any elite or group quest in northrend.
i found it an awful lot of fun.

at 71 you should have SiLi and FG then put points in aff as you level to strengthen your DoTs.

So go for empowered corruption and 5/5 Shadow Mastery instead of demonic tactics etc..

What glyphs would you recommend? Glyph of FG and SiLi? I was thinking of healthstone glyph as I am on a pvp server and this build lacks "oh &*!@" buttons. No imp HoT, no metamorphisis.

yes to FG and SiLi glyphs. if you want to pick PvP realm glyphs that's your decision really. if you think they're be more useful over all then you should use them.

yes also to SM and emp corruption. you don't need crit in this build at all so DT isn't so great.

it's not in the stickies because it's purely a levelling build and has no endgame uses really, though you could probably adapt it into something for PvP.

i just thought, i never actually linked you my suggested build.
i suggest you use SiLi/FG
i only took 1 point in mana feed because i turned the FG's anguish off (he's for damage not for tanking - the VW is for that) but you may want to take 2/3 in mana feed if you want to use anguish.
this build also makes a couple of concessions to be able to solo elites with a VW.

Would no Soul Siphon be one of those concessions?

Do you think with 2/3 in Mana feed (allowing FG to hold aggro) I can reduce Fel Concentration?

I haven't used VW in forever but the idea of soloing elites sounds good.

For rotation. I am guessing SL, CoA, Corr, Immolate? Then tap and drain life?

not really, soul siphon is ok but i don't see it adding a lot to your damage output. soul siphon is really good for Drain soul in end-game but a bit 'meh' for soloing.

your FG won't hold agro anyway so i wouldn't worry about it. the idea behind this build is you use instant DoTs only (SiLi, Corr,CoA), keep moving and DoT as many mobs as are in range. SiLi should just about equal the damage you take so once you've got lots of mobs on your, fully dotted you HoT, LT and drain.

Sl/FG is the best leveling spec IMO for a few reasons:

1) Great effeciency, you'll have little to no downtime.
2) Can take out large groups by just running around dotting, life tapping when needed and the odd drain life/soul if you have too.
3) The best spec by far for soloing group quests as it reinforces your pet and the lack of burst damage helps keep the agro on your pet.

The combination of improved health funnel, demonic resiliance and fel synergy is what allows you to easily solo elites. Feel free to move the 2/2 in master conjurer around. personally I found that I was rarely using health stones so didn't bother with imrpoved healthstone and I was rarely re-summoning my pet so master summoner was ditched. Improved drain soul is a great talent imo, the reduction in threat is great. If you dont plan on soloing many group quests then moving some points from demonic resiliance to mana feed could be a good idea, but I found 1/3 mana feed was enough.

In regard to some of your other questions:

Rotation wise I used Corr > CoA > SL, target next mob and repeat. Life tap, rinse and repeate. With the ammount of spirit I had, I found life tapping after every second mob kept my mana and 100%. I never used immolate when leveling, only on bosses in instances. Starting off with corruption means your most powerful dot will be ticking right from the start.

Demonic tactics is nice, but nothing special as you wont be stacking much crit. Spellpower will be your main stat, you'll want to prioritise this when selecting gear.

Feel free to reduce fel concentration, you wont be channeling much, its just a question of what do you pick up instead?

Totally agree with whats been said regarding the SiLi/FG build btw, great solo/levveling build, crap endgame. Entirely skips all the talents that scale with gear, no burst, poor inherent buffs, but very survivable.

DT=bad
SM=good for this type of build :)
