This is a complete AotD guide that covers all raids and all dungeons:
- Don't ever even think about clicking it unless your RL specifically asked you to do so
Problem solved.

This is the typical attitude given by ignorant people who do not wish to maximise their DPS potential.
Using army at the times I've noted on those ICC bosses will not cause any problems to your raid group whatsoever, as there will be no mobs they can taunt. Therefore the ghouls will act as a DPS boost, and a fairly significant one at that.
It's not ignorant, it's safe.
Take your Saurfang timing for example. You might get some extra dps but you risk wiping the whole raid if you pop them a bit too late (so that they are not expired on the first blood beasts).
Or let's look at gunship: I've never seen them there but couldn't it be possible that Saurfang on the enemy ship will not lose his stacks because he keeps attacking the ghouls? That might also cause a raid wipe.
I never said that you should not use AotD. I just said that your RL has to decide it, not an individual DK. If the RL gives the go for it then by all means, use it. But consult him first and make sure you are not screwing up the raid.
On a sidenote: AotD damage has been nerfed a lot. It might have been worth using it for dps in the past but right now I just don't see the point.

If you're any sort of decent DK you'll know when to use it, and if anyone in your raid %^&*!es about it your raid leader will be like "He knows his %^&*; leave him alone."
More like "GTFO! /raidkick /guildkick" after you messed up your timing by a few seconds and caused a wipe because ghouls were up when Blood Beasts spawned.

Which is why you don't be stupid about it and pop it a little earlier rather than a little later.
Sorry but "don't be stupid about stuff you do" is something that 95% of all raiders sadly will miserably fail at. If there is something stupid that can be done you can be sure that people will do it.
Better be on the safe side and ban AotD completely.
And you are not gimping your dps at all. You know you can just whisper the RL or talk to him on vent or something like that. He gives the go for AotD, you are on the safe side and can't be raged on if stuff goes wrong, everyone is happy.
All I'm saying is that you should never just pop it on your own without asking your RL. Just like a Shaman should never just pop Bloodlust on his own without asking the RL. Cooldowns that can have an effect on the whole raid simply should be coordinated and even if you think it's safe to use it (e.g. your example for the gunship battle - you might keep the stacks on the boss even when your tank jumped back) you just could be wrong about it. Better safe than sorry, ask your RL first.

Better safe than sorry, ask your RL first.
Just don't pop it when it is unsafe, there are guides (like the first post) that tell you want to do. If you are playing with people that don't want to do the max dps, then you may need to find new players.

On Saurfang it's more along the lines of..
Muradin: A lone Orc against the might of the Alliance?
*pause*
Muradin: CHARGE!
*runs forward and gets Force Choked*
Deathbringer Saurfang: *chuckles* Dwarves...
I'll usually pop it right when he says "Dwarves..."; there's still a good 2-3 seconds before he becomes active (AotD's a 4sec cast so it times out perfectly); usually good to go JUST as he's active or 1sec in.
