Above is correct.

Attack power is used for increasing your damage with a weapon (14 AP = 1 DPS) on autoswing and it acts like spell power for melee classes, for example, the death knight ability Death and Decay is modified by attack power, whereas a paladin's Consecration is effected by both SP and AP, and a mage's Flame Strike is only effect by spell power.

Does not.

Attack Power adds certain amount of damage to your normal attacks and certain abilities (as caster, you are probably getting absolutely no bonus whatsoever). You want Spellpower, that's what's giving you damage - again, your abilities will take a percent off your Spellpower and add it to their damage.
