Balance is our best DPS tree, and it has some good synergistic effects with restoration. So a balance druid is primarily DPS, and secondarily a healer, and thirdly a tank.
Firstly, Balance spec does not have better DPS than a feral druid in cat form. Thats like saying a Mage has more DPS than a rogue.
The way your looking at it is by base dmg in the way its displayed on a dmg meter. Where as thats not DPS (unless u make it so that it is recording DPS). Just because your Damage Meter is displaying a balance druid or mage etc is leading the Damage Done, Doesn't mean they are doing more DPS. DPS is how much dmg u can do in a second.....and the simple fact that all of a cats attacks are instant and balance attacks have castng time of 2 - 3 seconds or w/e they are, simly suggest that they arent doing more DPS, they are just doing alot of burst dmg.
So just like mages, they may be doing more dmg overall, but it certainly aint DAMAGE PER SECOND......all it is, is a massive crit at the end of a casting attack.
Anyway, i would say Feral would be more fun to play in the long run. Balance would be good, but u would get over it pretty fast.
Actually, moonkin dps is considerably higher in similiar gear. I'm barely pushing 800 dps in feral gear atm, but I tank most of the time. Even if I had better kitty dps gear, balance dps is still greater.
Balance = DPS
Feral = Tanking/DPS
Resto = Healing
DPS is DPS, if I average 1000 dps with wrath spam, its no different than me average 800 dps with mangle spam.
Melee gets auto attacks, casters (most) get some dots.
Melee gets specal attacks, sinster strike, hemo, backstab, magle, shred, crusader strike, claw. Casters get casted spells.
Its all the same.

We're not really disagreeing with Watchagot, he just misunderstood what dps means.
The dps you should be interrested in basically boils down to :
"damage done during the whole fight" / "duration of the fight"
Cast time of individual spells or abilities does not factor into this.
The fact that cat attacks are instants doesn't mean they do more dps, since dps is a statistical average over time.
Else there wouldn't be any meaning to feral dps, you would be dividing by 0...
