If you level as beastmaster (which is arguably the easiest way for hunters) then it won't matter which pet you tame. It will survive just fine anyway as long as you don't behave stupidly. :)

Do note that DPS type pets will become even stronger if you're beastmaster compared to tanking-style pets (such as the boar); taming a cat, raptor, ravager, bat or owl instead will immediately give you a noticeable DPS boost and killing speed increase compared to a boar.

I really like ravagers as they do awesome melee damage, but these are hard to get at low levels (can only be tamed on Draenei starting isles), and you better get it soon because if you wait there won't be any to tame for dozens of levels.

If you are leveling, Boars make great tanking/leveling pets. With thier Charge ability combo'd up with Growl and Gore, thats a lot of threat it has built up. It can be difficult to pull the mob off the pet after that unless you go balls-to-the-wall out on it.

Not only that, but they're easy pets to keep happy... they eat ANYTHING! You can grab whatever trashy food item you get off mobs... and just feed him. Not only that, but conjured bread from mages works too! The end result is that they cost virtually 0C if you kill any mobs that drop some sort of food item... or if you quest around with a mage.

Level with a boar or crab.

I don't say that out of preference for the boar or crab, but rather because it's a real pain to level up these two types if you decide you want one later due to no crabs and only demon-boars in Outlands. Recently grabbed a boar to complement my scorpid (Sarkoth) and had to level him from 25 (not the highest, there's a rare 50 spawn) to 70. Ugh.
