I used mostly downranked Healing Touch almost exclusively until 70, if I remember correctly. Was an old habit from back when it was the norm for healing, before everything became OMGTREEHOTHOTHOT. While I had used it every now and then in pre-TBC raiding, I didn't sport tree form heavily in 5-man instances until I significantly picked my gear up at 70. I was still using my pre-TBC epics the entire way to 70. Depending on your gear/+healing you can use HoTs sparingly but you probably won't see as much power from them for the mana cost. It's good to put some Rejuv on targets with missing HP but without a high heal priority (ie. not actively taking damage or in total danger of dying within the next 3 seconds), since Healing Touch is a rather slow-casting heal. But I wouldn't let someone else tell you how you're supposed to heal, remember that the rest of the world thinks that Spirit is always a resto druid's main stat. If you did just fine using Healing Touch, then you did just fine. Just cast the spells you're comfortable with using, and if your party says anything else simply point out that they obviously aren't dead and should worry about playing their own class. :P

I healed instances the same way since Deadmines. I never used Healing Touch because of it's casting time, instead I just used Regrowth and Rejuvenation to always keep the tank at full health. Because HoTs won't pull aggro as much as a direct spell (Healing Touch) it was safer for me to just use HoTs. Now that I am 70 with well equiped healing gear, I can say that all I use its HoTs in both PvP and PvE. I make sure to keep the tank at full health at all points and in return I don't get aggro, and we all stay alive.
I make sure to have this sequence bound to my mouse (with Clique and Grid of course) to keep the tank at full health at all points. Lifebloom, Rejuvenation, Lifebloom. If the tank falls below 70% health I will cast a Regrowth which will critical for 3000. Plus the HoT equivalent you should be in good shape.
As a note. The more +healing you have the better your HoTs will be. I have almost 1400 healing unbuffed and my Lifebloom will critical for just as much as my Regrowth. My Rejuvenation can hit for almost 800 per tick thanks to all the healing I have.
