It was a very long time ago now but I seem to recall that the mana gain did stack, might have been fixed, but not the spellpower buff. So you'll get 50% more mana in total if you use both the set and the trinket but still just the SP buff from one of them.

Yes, they do stack.
No, they are no longer useful. Mana hasn't been a problem for Mages for some time.
