Building combo points as a dagger rogue

Right so I'm leveling as daggers (not the most effecient I know) and I wanted to ask some of you experts out here how you build up your combo points after that intial ambush/cheap shot. I've heard folks say that Sinister Strike is terrible for daggers (and I understand why) but other than that strike, I'm not sure what others use to generate combo points.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

When you cant get behind your opponent there isnt much other choice. I'll take shiv over sinister strike any day for a dagger build.
Well that's a shame, because sinister strike offers better DPE than shiv, even with a dagger.

Yes... shiv is a minimum of 33 energy, with sinister strike being 40. A main-hand attack (also with the possibility to proc a poison) is much more damaging.
Sinister strike rank 9 deals main-hand weapon damage + 80 (with rank 10 being + 98) for 40 energy when talented. Shiv rank one deals off-hand weapon damage and applies a poison for 20+(10*weapon speed) energy. Sinister strike is far superior.

So the point being, if you can't get behind your enemy for a Backstab you might as well go ahead and use Sinister Strike (or Shiv once you get it) if you need to generate some points. Right?
Kinda what I figured but just wanted some input from those more experienced. Well hopefully Blizz will give some love to dagger rogues soon and help bring them closer to par with sword/mace builds.
Thanks for the input guys!

Funny, I see instant poison crit all the time while leveling.
If I recall correctly, poisons use our spell critical strike chance. So given the fact that rogues don't wear +spell critical gear, I think the chance to crit with instant poison is ~5%.
