You can always buy mounts from your home faction regardless of reputation. In your case, you can buy the mechanostriders from Milli Featherwhistle just northeast of Kharanos. As a gnome, your home faction is actually Gnomeregan Exiles and not Ironforge even though the gnomes are based in Ironforge at the moment.

you do not need reputation with your own race to get a mount. if the mechanical bird mounts are red from vendor @ Khronos, then you have not yet learned the riding skill from a riding trainer. Check the guy next to the mount vendor..he should show book (with curser hover) like any other trainer
