I'd really like to chat with people who aren't playing any Battlenet games while I'm in WoW. Can you connect normal instant messengers to WoW chat servers or use some kind of addon?

It's not possible.
An addon cannot simply do that, what you need is a completely different program which interfaces himself with you IM system and the WoW one.
I think that's even against the EULA, since third part programs cannot access to WoW data apart the ones already visible.

That's what I was thinking. Really need a Blizzard-official external messenger tool.

And why would they develop it? There is already the battle.net system online which connect all Blizzard applications, so I don't see it coming at any time.

Why would they not develop it? Last thing i heard is that they're charging like 3e/month for the mobile armory (which includes or will include access to your guild chat and whispers from your phone?)
