Jinai glanced sideways at Violet and stifled a snort, though not altogether displeased with someone else being able to take Joaquin's attention. The young woman instead returned her attention to her meal, which she ate at a formal, but steady pace.
Tristan grimaced, "So, imagine you have an unlimited supply of gourmet pies right in front of you. Pies that you
really
enjoy eating. Now let's say that someone comes up to you and says that you're only allowed to eat a pie if someone else comes around and eats one too, and if you try to eat a pie when nobody else is around, you'll get the living daylights beaten out of you.
Now
just imagine that on top of staring at all those pies all day, and barely
anybody
stops to eat a pie, and usually only does so just so they can stare at you in a really uncomfortable fashion and try to figure out why you can only eat pies with someone else."

"Since you've been here for the entire performance so far," Joaquin replied, never stopping the music, "I imagine your inquiry concerns the age I first took an instrument of art into my hands. Twelve I was, and soon shall I celebrate a full decade - quite a milestone, wouldn't you agree?"
"I think I'm being goaded into saying something like, 'Let me show you just how wrong you are.' Oh wait, I did just say that, did I not? Deary me..." Eryan snorted.
((My bad, Gum.))

Arthur had leaned back when Tristan began speaking, absorbing what the other youth was saying. The candle light from the chandeliers flickered off his glasses as he stared at the ceiling silently. When Tristan stopped, Arthur nodded slowly. "Hmm. That would indeed...suck."
"Hmm. I see. Well, I suppose we could always test my theory if you just stood there for a second," Vera said, pointing to a spot between the tables.

I
wouldn't want to assume, after all."

"Yeah," Tristan shrugged, "and that's what it's like with me and magic."

"Hmm," Arthur murmured thoughtfully. So he could cast magic, but only by copying someone else's. Anyone else's, according to the papers. His eyes sparked with interest, an intrigued smile twitching at his lips. "That is very...unusual." Grabbing the lip of the table, Arthur straightened and leaned slightly forward. "And you have no idea why that is?"

"Not in the least," the redhead sighed, slipping his face into his hands again, "everyone chalks it up to some bizarre magical anomaly. Like a mage who can only cast polymorph or turns things blue when he uses spells on them."

Arthur nodded. He leaned a little forward, looking at Tristan fixedly and studiously. "That's what tends to happen to exceptions to the rule. How can you copy spells exactly? Do you sort of...forget the way to work the spells after you cast it? Or is it more you....hmm, how to describe this...Do you overlay the spell work onto yourself like a...a scroll! Yes, a one time use and then once done the magic is burned up."

Character: Callyx
Location: Mage Tower
School: Arcane
The tiniest suggestion of a frown crept onto Callyx's face. This was not going well at all. The intention was not to be a loner. The intention was to build up a collection of powerful friends.
But perhaps it could not be helped. Socialization had never been a strong suit. Perhaps another strategy could be employed.
Callyx sat up and moved to Arthur's table without a word, and sat down without making eye contact.
Character: Caligula
Location: Tech Dormitory
School: Technomancy
Caligula filled his plate with mainly fish. It was a good selection, though not nearly as extravagant as what he was used to. But, ah well, sacrifices had to be made for power.

Arthur paused in his questioning and turned to look at the newcomer. He had a look of mild displeasure at the interruption and glared slightly at the androgynous youth.

Tristan rubbed his knuckles into his forehead, barely noticing Callyx, "I can see spells being cast, like... threads? Complex threads in their own unique patterns. People cast everything differently, even if you don't
think
they do. The way you cast a firebolt might be differently than the way somebody else does. I see
that
structure, and it's like my hands know what they're copying but my brain doesn't. It's too intricate to try and remember afterwards. Trust me, I've tried. You cross the arcane threads wrong and 'boom'."
