A hunter in another guild whos a long time friend and running mate recently brought something to my attention last night after a naxx run. He logged the run and posted it to a wws report.
Normally I beat him handily by about 500-1000 dps on boss fights. This run was no different. Here's whats confusing: He out gears me and he pretty much has always out geared me. Our specs are similar for the most part, other than a few minor variances here and there and we use the same rotation and the same glyphs. Both of us use a cat and according to the wws both of us use our cd's about the same amount of time.
I didnt get the link to the report unfortunately but i can tell you what i saw for me:
51% Auto Shots
41% Steady Shots
8% everything else
a pretty sizeable gap but not suprising with the extra haste I run with.
Auto Shots - Avg 1700 max 2200 crits avg 3400 max 6800
my average auto shot was 1500 more than his and his auto to steady was almost dead even.
this explains why im doing more dps and damage than he is. bigger shots hitting more often is obvious, but we cant figure out why im hitting that much harder than he is. He has close to 200 more RAP than I do and a whopping 6% more crit. Assuming we do everything the same theres no reason why i should be doing that much more than him.

you've got about 100 more hit and rating than he does.
he's got higher crit and AP however.
so, possibly that more of your shots are hitting than his?

no
he has 3/3 focused aim. He is actually over the cap by a fair amount.
im not sure how much that top end damage difference would cause it to differ. I mean if you spread sheet the 2 weapons the xbow comes out on top by about 10 dps.
and its only 36 more ghosted3. Not 100

They're both hit capped so, unless theres a mechanic that we don't understand I think it has to be your higher max damage.
I think with AP as high as yours is, your modal damage is near the top of your max possible roll. You're hitting for higher numbers on your autos. Thats the only difference I can figure, everything else says otherwise.
If that is true, it would make the gun unequivocally better than the bow and slightly lower than the Naxx bow.
thats gotta be it. I missed it originally.
his range:
1126 - 1273
612.7 dps
my range:
1096 - 1318
633.4 dps
but an average of 1500 more per AS?
and i thought that a higher top end w/ tighter range was better?

Just want to make sure you're not misunderstanding the data.
If you could get a link to the report from him, that would help tremendously.
thats exactly what i mean.
I mean i was going off of what he was telling me since i couldnt see the report. I was just trying to compare what he was saying to the recount data i had.
He may have been high when he said 1500 more but the average was definitely double his. Verified that on recount as well.

i dont know if this is relevent to this argument, but how many shots did he get off vs. you? was he running around more?
It would be relevant in dps yes. But not relevent to the difference of damage per autoshot.

I said in the original post that we use the same trinket rotation basically. But he has more mana and more intellect and slower attack speed. I would go OOM quicker than he would. The only way that would matter is if he forget to come out of viper, but again... Im consistantly higher.

and you stated the obvious. Good job. I know where the dps difference is from. The question was in regards tho the huge difference in auto shot damage.
but... doesnt matter really.
