Amazonjade, your last paragraph is a bit moot. Kitty dps is nowhere near as hard as it used to be in WotLK.
When I bear tank, it's all about timing, mob management, rage management, waiting for cooldowns and boss abilities to use them on.
That's because you're a tank, not because you're a bear specifically. You need to know when to pop cds (but dps needs to know that as well at times), ready to move the mob when melee is standing in fire. And when to maul if you have excess rage. But that's it really.
There is downtime even when playing kitty dps, giving yourself a little 3-5 second breather to gain energy (so you have enough to redo a 5 point rip by the time the rip wears off), meticulously managing savage roar on yourself and the dots and mangle on your target.
The only "downtime" is waiting for energy to fill up. We no longer meticulously manage SR since Cata, because it only boosts auto-attacks. Right now, if you can put up your bleeds and keep them up, your dps will be pretty high already.
Btw warlocks have downtime as well, it's called Life Tap.
There will be times as a kitty where you are taking massive aoe damage because you are in melee range and thinking "omg should I move or just take down this mob?" Sometimes you will have to just eat the damage if it's unavoidable, and there will be times you have to move, get out of the fire because the tank isn't smart enough to drag the mob out so you can dps it.
The bane of being melee I'm afraid. It's a known "issue" that ranged is favoured atm.
Yes, the tank should pull a mob out of fire to make it easier for the melee, but you have to move out of it regardless. Bosses have large hit boxes, and fire rarely covers it completely ...

i think to switch from mage to kitty. u realy need to think about it...
here is some things:
U need to start beeing realy active during raids/runs.. u cant as before.. press 4 and do other stuff. kitty is the most advance dps rotation there is in wow.. and todo that in Cata.. and be alert to what happends.. AND even have your CC under control... takes ALOT of effort and skills to be honest..
Myself am CRAP at kitty.. therefor i go moonkin =D.. its about the same as mage.. just a couple of more buttons to press.
Good luck.. and if u choise to swap.. welcome to the world of druids =)

The rotation of a lot of classes became slightly more complex in Cata (thinking demo locks and dks here). Feral on the other hand became more forgiving (and the priorities are slightly different, e.g. get Rip up asap, then use a low amount of CP to get Savage Roar).

Wow. I can relate to this post word for word.
Back in TBC I started playing a druid because I liked the lore etc behind it. At 28 and 2 weeks of leveling as "boomkin" and drinking after EVERY mob pull I decided to quit it and go mage. At 70 on the mage a month later and never seeing anything because mages were fotm on TVC I re-rolled back to the druid but after learning my lesson went feral and stayed that way.
In response to the question, like almost all classes now, you will not be able to fully appreciate a druids full potential until your early 80s where youre filling out the last talents and have almost every tool a druid has to offer. Id say by as early 69 when you get Berserk and with the reduced priority of Savage Roar (lvl 75 I think) you will have learnt a lot about a kitteh's rotation and when you do get Savage Roar you can start to work on ironing out the full rotation.
Bear on the other hand you will probably learn out much earlier. At 36 you will learn Swipe, this is your AoE ability and will be your ONLY AoE ability until 81 and Thrash. You will learn an ability called Thorns quite early that is a buff you can cast on yourself that will deal nature damage to mobs that melee hit you (important to note that ranged attacks/spell wont proc this damage) and at 25 you will be able to glyph Thorns to be up almost all the time. Using this in dungeons will be a lifesaver as it will help stick melee mobs to you while chasing a caster hitting some huntard. At 66 you will have just learned Lacerate which will help drastically as it is a DoT with a huge initial threat dump, spread liberally on anything that isnt CC'd. These skills will be your bread and butter spam buttons late into your 70's until 81 where you get Thrash. At early levels you will have to struggle with AoE happy dps and Swipe on a 6scd. Thorns can be a saving grace in this respect, glyph it, and in between pulls you can recast it on yourself (probably even midfight mobs at these levels hit like wet noodles).
Do be aware however that bosses in the low level instances have been buffed ... by a few 1000 hit points and by about 100% damage. The Lightbringer crew and myself found that out the hard way.
