For me what I did which was really easy was to just fish a bunch of the sculpin and manta rays and just burn them till they greyed out. It is FAR easier than trying to get all the ingredients together to make the feasts and they will grey at around 415.
In reply to the op, YES YES YES.. I find it incredibly annoying the way they have done ALL the trades this time around. They have made leveling skills far more difficult. To get a skill point in cooking at 437 there is NOTHING I can make. I have to take my chances with green recipies and hope that the 10 spices that I get for the daily cooking quest will be enough.
I find Tailoring and Enchanting just as annoying. In order to get ANY points past 400 you are required to sink a TON of mats into one attempt.

Cooking seems to be really messed up, sadly. Everything goes green too fast, and I'm told that when you hit 450 cooking all your recipes will be at grey. For me, I just bought a pile of worg haunches (10g per stack on server) and churned out roasted worg (20-30g per stack) until I had 420 cooking. In the end, I think I made something like 300 roasted worgs to get 6-7 points in cooking.

It took ~70 spices to level from 449 to 450.

I've pretty much given up with regards to leveling up to 450. If it happens, it happens. I never saw 375 in Outlands because I don't fish (I found leveling fishing to be a HUGE pain and don't have the patience).
Currently my Paladin's cooking is around 420 and all the Dalaran recipes I've purchased from the vendor are green (and always have been) and even when I make 10 items I MIGHT get a level up. It was sheer hell getting to 400. I basically had to make about 25 feasts (good thing I have a hunter that kills things quickly and I sent the meat to the Pally). My Paladin is the designated cook. I'm not even going to bother doing it with my Hunter because it takes so much effort.
What gets me is that I do the cooking daily every day. You'd think the food you make for the quest should at least give you one level up. Then you look at the recipes and most are for both meat and fish..except a few (like the aforementioned one for Hit Rating) that I need for my Hunter. A few of the recipes are just silly or useless.
I'm sick of them tying cooking to fishing. Heck they even tie fishing to Alchemy! It's nuts. I shouldn't have to fish to make a recipe or a flask or elixir. Some of us don't want to sit for hours at a time and level up fishing. I got to 175 and just about pulled my hair out.

I got to level 465 and now I guess I have to do dailies to get the "Salted Eye" recipe. They say it will hold out until level 490. That remains to be seen. I agree that Blizz messed up badly with the cooking levels. We shouldn't have to fuss around to find a recipe that will squeak us through to the next major recipe. I feared this would be the problem as it is with most of the crafting professions. I chose not to do the main professions but did like the idea of fishing, cooking, and first aid to kill some of the mats I collect along the way. Not the case anymore. I do enjoy fishing so it isn't a problem if I can't progress. Just to do it is fun. Hey...if you need fish let me know...I will give away what I get. I am in Cairne and a human pally. I love doing it, but the cooking is proving to be a huge pain.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##asakawa##DELIM##2008 was a really long time ago and the details being discussed in this thread have gone through iterative change since then.
