Oh, cool! You've invented a system that can tell the difference between "gtg, cat's on fire" and "my shield didn't drop, cya!"
In my opinion, based on recent personal experience in Cata heroics, tanking is about 3 times more "difficult" than healing, and about 10 times more "difficult" than dps. If you want good/decent tanks, you should be petitioning Blizz to create more REWARDS for tanking, not asking them to penalize any tank that might happen to leave a dungeon group for whatever reason.
QFT.
Seriously guys, can you honestly tell me that this is going to do anything other than drive more tanks toward running with guildies/friends, which will in turn increase your que time?

This.
Penalizing tanks is bad, it will only result in tanks having less fun in the game and it will increase the tank shortage.
There is a very easy solution: Make a cheap (like 20g a piece) craftable ilvl 339
PvE
set for every tanking class. That way everyone can just buy crafted gear for almost nothing and be instantly ready to be an off spec tank for heroics.
Yes, at first there will be a few noob tanks who just jump in and don't know how to tank properly. But they will learn and a few weeks later we will have an abundane of tanks because almost every single Warrior / DK / Druid / Paladin will queue as tank.

I do agree you should give it a go though, tanking now is a pain in the ass, not because I want to pull everything WotLK style, but because dps don't
attack skull
. I hate that I have to put a skull up in the 1st place, when people can simply attack my target, yet they still ignore it. Especially as aoe threat is not anywhere near what it used to be.
Dps attacking after CC too, so mobs run all over the place drives me nuts, and finally, waiting 30s between each pull for a poly or sap. No tanking without guildies (and even in my current guild they don't attack skull >.>).
So for those reasons, I do not want to tank a whole instance if I queued specifically for loot unless I hasten to add,
the group is good
. When I get a good group (which isn't as rare as you'd think), tanking is one of the most fun jobs in WoW. When dps understand who to attack, when not to aoe and are on the ball with CC. When the healer will tell me if I'm going too slow of fast rather than saying "LOL BAD TANK KTHNXBAI."
I made a tank because I enjoy it, and it really is fun with a decent group.
As a moonkin dps, I appreciate the tanks that do mark. I have had too many times where I misjudge the timing on when to select the tank's target and start nuking the wrong thing. If you want me to use CC on something, tell me which symbol is mine and toss that baby up there.
Any DPS regularly using AoE is probably Doing It Wrong TM. I think the only thing I'm using AoE on now is Trogg packs.
I have over-all been lucky in LFD. Most runs have finished, and most groups have been understanding when strategies are not known. Look, it's
random
dungeon finder. You never know which dungeon you're going to get dropped into.
I can watch tankspot until the cows come home, but I don't learn the fight as well as doing it in person. That means, my first time in, I'm going to need the cliff notes version of what to do. And I may not live up to my full potential. This time. Next time, I will be better.
Had a partial run of HDeadmines the other day that was awesome. None of us knew the fights, so we went at it assuming we would wipe a few times. If it hadn't been so late, we would have gotten more than 4 bosses in.
I know there are good tanks out there. I've run into quite a few of them. I've also run into the ones who seem to have forgotten this isn't Northrend any more, Toto.

This would only impact people who leave the group of their own accord.
I'd also suggest that it not apply immediately
; there are times when we all may have to drop out of a run for reasons we can't control, and I don't think those people should penalized - but those tend to be the exception, not the rule.
Oh, cool! You've invented a system that can tell the difference between "gtg, cat's on fire" and "my shield didn't drop, cya!"
No. I've proposed a system that would recognize when UbertankX drops group multiple times
for any reason
, showing a consistent habit of leaving runs before they are complete. So, in response: Oh cool! You failed to read/comprehend my entire post, thus your sarcasm is misplaced.
If you want good/decent tanks, you should be petitioning Blizz to create more REWARDS for tanking, not asking them to penalize any tank that might happen to leave a dungeon group for whatever reason.
I
have
a good tank - me. I don't need to petition Blizz to reward me for running a dungeon; if I sign up for a dungeon, I stick to the end, unless something in real life forces me to quit - that's true whether my gear doesn't drop or no.
And again, I'm not saying they should "penalize any tank that might happen to leave the dungeon group". I'm saying they should penalize tanks that show a habit of leaving dungeon groups; the current penalty does not seem to be deterring it sufficiently, according to the observations of some.

Dear OP:
While I can understand your frustrations, I've had a recent experience with a learning tank from my guild. She was very slow, was obviously reading up on her targets as the dungeons came up and did an excellent job of tanking outside of how long it took.
Yes, she could have been faster but had she done that, we would have wiped numerous times. If I can't get a tank who knows tanking inside out (and hopefully the dungeon we are in) then I'd prefer one who takes a couple of minutes on each boss to read up on tacts. Not everyone that's learning to tank can hold all the tacts for every boss in their head and I personally don't mind them taking the time while we are in the dungeon.
Ofc, that's not for everyone, so all I can suggest is that you make friends with a tank who knows what they are doing and make plans to run with them. It's a very tough job and I'm grateful to everyone who attempts it, particularly as I'm not willing to put myself through the abuse I've seen them get in pugs.
Good luck and happy looting.

Simple:
Take a rez sickness debuff which includes a durability loss as well
higher geared tanks will take big punch for the repair
Problem with that. You can bank all your gear and continue to be an ass.
Indeed. In the case of a group I had last night, a shammy kept demanding to be kicked. We refused as he hadn't done anything wrong until that point, so he decided three times to be a jerk and make pulls that would wipe us. After the third wipe, he finally left.
In between wipes, he kept saying 'QQ moar'. Until then, I'd never come across this mentality myself, although I've heard of others experiencing it, and all it did was make me want to reach through the monitor and ^&*!@ slap him back into the 1970s so that when he woke up, hopefully his clothes would be out of fashion. Ain't no need EVER to be a jerk like that. If you don't like the group and your votes to kick fail, then just leave and take the timeout.
Edited for clarity.

You promptly left after 5 different tanks? I'm not sure what your definition of "prompt" is but it certainly conflicts with mine.
The promptness came in the (lack of) time in between the 5th tank leaving the group and myself giving up.
I'd like to think I was rather patient throughout the run. :)

Looks like Blizzard recognizes the pain and is trying to address it.
From a
recent post by Bashiok
, here are a few key changes coming down the pipe:
Players who are outside a dungeon for more than a few minutes are now immediately able to be kicked.
If queuing as a group with a tank or healer, and the tank or healer drops group (or is kicked) soon after joining, those that queued with them will also be removed from the dungeon.
If three or more players group queue with each other it will require an additional vote for them to kick anyone they did not group queue with.
If a group queue of 4 kicks the one person that they did not group queue with they will each receive a more severe penalty to their ability to initiate future kicks.
If someone initiates a vote kick for someone they group queued with they will not incur a penalty to their ability to initiate future kicks.
This means no more "spite kicking" by premades, no more selling quick queues by tanks/healers, and no more "hostage takers" who try to derail the run by porting out of the instance. The only downside I see to this is that it doesn't really address the tank that drops group upon not getting a drop they want.

Dear OP. You should love anyone that actually bothers to queue to tank a 5man pug. Even if their skill is low and they pull 2 packs at a time, they are way better players than any frostmagetard that says "gogogogogogooo" and spams aoe even at single target.
And the reason they have bad gear is that any tank drop that actually drops always, without exception gets needed and won by either a Jenkins titled ret paladin with spiky hairdo or a deathknight with "dk" "death" "deth" "dark" "shadow" "arthas" "killa" "swe" or "pwn" in their name, so any gear they can get by soloing or spending money/points on is the only gear available to a pug tank.
And if you think the tanks suck, look at the rest of the group, are they actually any better? You cant just expect tanks to be great when all pug healers are semi afk downloading hentai pr0n while playing, and dpsers entire vocabulary consists of "Huntard ffs" "GOGOGOGO" and "DPS-metorz plzzz ENYONE?"

Dear Tanks, you suck.
- Tank drops group after the 1st boss, because he got his friggin flowers and achie.
- Tank has less HP than the healer. And has no shield.
- Tank assumes Ret Aura and melee is enough to hold aggro.
- Tank calls me names after i politely ask him to turn on Righteous Fury.
- Tank pulls boss after being told it will also aggro the mobs
- Tank puts D&D on cc'ed mobs.
Dear DPS, you suck.
- DPS pulls aggro from unmarked mob. Hitting skull is hard.
- DPS forgets to interrupt. You know, mine has a CD too.
- DPS tries to leech his way through, doing less dps than the healer.
- DPS needs on my tanking gear and wins.
- DPS forgets to put pet on passive, breaks own cc.
- DPS pulls instead of tank, followed by "gogogo".
Dear Healers, you suck.
- Healer enters, does a few packs. Gets achie for random faction and drops group.
- Priest healer thinks he can heal cata hc as Shadow.
- Healer afk for 4 minutes right after queue (couldn't go bio during his wait?).
- Healer pulls instead of tank, followed by "gogogo".
This is all from the past few days.
Now, this isn't QQ. It's just my way of saying: every role has their bads/jerks.
Now deal with it. The discussion which role sucks most is getting old.
