Defense/Defense Rating?

Alright, my Defense is 435, and underneath it says my Defense Rating is 208 (+56 Defense)...What's the purpose of listing this way?

Defense skill is the old stat from before the combat rating system was introduced, defense rating is what you get from your gear, adding to your base defense (5 times level, like weapon skills etc.). Basically the combat ratings system means that bonuses from gear are converted into percentages or skills depending on what level you are - the higher your level, the less you get per rating point. This is to ensure that people wouldn't be running around with 100% crit and silly things like that with the upgraded gear made available in TBC and now WotLK.
