Deflection of ranged attacks/spells?

So, I have noticed a few spells or ranged attacks from mobs can be "deflected" - possibly the other way around too. Does anyone know how this mechanic works? I haven't seen much info about it.

Its some kind of avoidance that falls outside the usual system of resist and miss (as well as dodge, parry, block for melee attacks). My combatlog simply said that the ability was deflected.
