About the Equalists, they were around well before Korra got into Republic City. Since Amon left his family at the age of 14 and is 40 at the end of book 1, he could have started it in his late 20s early 30s. It could have easily been 10 years since they formed. And Amon is also a great speaker, meaning he could possibly persuade more people to join.
And some of what he said may hold some truths. He may have become spiritual, and even possibly talked to some spirits. But he might have got the idea wrong about "bring balance to the world as the Avatar had failed in doing so". Instead of going against the Avatar, he could have helped them. But like you said, we don't know much about what happened between him running away and starting the Equalists.
But yeah, like I edited in up there, the best reason people can come up with him being able to take away their bending is that he uses his blood-bending and some knowledge of chi-blocking to take away their bending.
I don't know, Noatak, a.k.a. Amon, could still be alive after all. He is one hell of a blood-bender, he could probably tell that Tarrlok was doing something and could have got away before it exploded. I tried looking for a trope for it but couldn't find one about the bad guy "dying". They only had the mushroom cloud, they didn't actually show them dying.
I honestly hope they don't. That scene was one of the most emotionally powerful scenes I've seen in animation, and it would be ruined if it was all for nothing.
It would suck, but even on the Avatar wiki it has it put as "Age: 40 (presumably deceased)". So I'm not the only one thinking it lol. But DiMartino said
"We set the bar high, then higher again. There were many times I thought we weren’t going to make it over that bar. "
, making me believe that they might not pull some stunt like that.
And does anyone know when season 2 starts?
Sadly, I haven't heard of anything about when. My best guess would probably be
spring of next year, maybe summer
after reading
this
, it seems they got another year, year and a half, before it'll come out. They say it takes about 2 years for each of the seasons, and t hey're about halfway through book 2 for Korra.
There are also some fan questions here if you wanna take a look.

Well original Avatar was one season per year(with the weird break up of book 3).

Right now, I'm just wondering where the plot is gonna go. Obviously she will continue to improve her abilities as the Avatar, but is there gonna be some new villain? Or maybe Amon survived somehow? That's what I'm wondering right now.
And does anyone know when season 2 starts?
as for the bit inside the spoiler, me thinks, next season will deal with "the man behind the man" I still believe there was someone else manipulating this whole stuff from the shadows, and that Amon was just a tool of this someone.
As for when will season 2 starts, nobody knows. They haven't said anything. But to be clear, we're gonna have to wait a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time for it.
As a reference, Episode 1 of Season 1 for Avatar: The Last Airbender, aired on February 1 2005. Episode 1 of Season 2 aired well over a year later, on March 17 2006. Episode 1 of Season 3 aired a year and a half later, on september 21 2007.
So, roughly at least 1 year apart per season. So......... yeah, no more korra for a long long time.
/sad-panda.

These topics in OT move too fast sometimes lol. I'll see a reply after making a new post, edit a reply to that in then after that someone else has already posted.
But yeah, 1/1.5 years for Book 2 of Korra.

Appreciate the info though, thanks guys!

personally I don't mind the wait but I do hope they make more than just 2 seasons. A show as good as this deserves more than simply 26 episodes total.
The first show had 61, this one SHOULD have at least as many, if not more.
Edit:
I'm still wondering how the hell did they managed to get away with the Murder-Suicide ONSCREEN scene, on a kid's cartoon in a saturday morning timeslot.
Were the stupid overzealous moral watchdogs asleep during that one? To give you guys an idea, not even
FAMILY GUY
has done that. And this show did. =P

Yeah, but that's not for them to decide. They would probably love to do 1, maybe 2 more seasons. Hopefully between now and Book 2 premieres, they get the green light for one more season.

My idea on how Amon took bending is he created a small blood clot in the brain with some chi blocking thrown in for good measure not energy bending.
On a different note how did Azula lie to Toph and not have the body reaction like ever normal person.

You think there's enough Korra discussion to warrant a thread? I plan on getting into the show but it seems skewed in the Bin.

More then a korra thread make it a discussion of the whole avatar universe.

If you want to, make it. But there is some discussion here and you can also talk more about it on the T.V. Show thread like I was doing with Adamsm a while ago.
Either way, I'll be happy to discussion it with anyone ^.^

stupid and overzealous? Not wanting a 6 year old to watch that? Perhaps "reasonable" would be a more accurate description for those people.

Honestly, I saw nothing wrong with it. They didn't show body parts flying across the screen, all it had was him holding the electro-glove over the gas tank then cut to a shot of the mushroom cloud forming. It was just implied that they died, and even then we're not sure if they're both dead.

Death happens...and since Korra is aimed at the over 10 crowd anyways, not any different.
Heck, think about it over the years: Optimus Prime died, Duke was originally suppose to die, the remake of He-Man actually showed the accident that turned Keldor into Skeletor(as in, his face melting off and the skeletal features appearing below), and don't forget in a Power Rangers show of all, they showed the death of the Red Ranger Cole's parents on Wild Force(okay they showed shadows of the parents being skewered by the deadly vines but still).
It's not that huge anymore; and of course in the original Avatar, you saw a character mortally wounded and another one give up their life.

Can we agree that it would have not aired 10 years ago?

I'd say it was a better chance; 10 years ago was when two of those examples aired(well around then); Wild Force and the 2002 version of He-Man.

Ten years ago was also the time-frame that DBZ was airing in the states, and there they had that kind of stuff. Sure it was censored, but they still had Goku and Raditz getting impaled by Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon.
Even now, they're showing the Kai version of it in the mornings on the CW. And they're showing GT on the NickToons channel.
Now I'm not sure how changed the Kai version is, but I know that the original had all sorts of things in it that many would disagree with. Such as Hercule actually being known as Mr. Satan and his daughter Videl is an anagram of Devil. And there are even more things like that in it.
Even the older shows like Hey Arnold! has some negative things in it. Such as the one girl's mother being a drunk. It was never said in the show, but you could tell from how she acts. And later on that someone, the creators I think, confirmed that she was a drunk. Going back and watching cartoons now that I watched when I was younger has me noticing things like this. Even now, some shows have gotten more lenient on what is said in cartoons. One of the newer ones on Cartoon Network even has one of the characters say "pissed". Now its not that bad of a word, but for an after-school airing show I was a little shocked they said it. I even re-winded it on my DVR to make sure I heard it right.
