I'm wondering where to put those spare points in the Elemental PvE spec.
How is AR working exactly? 10% damage reduction while casting sounds nice but what exactly does "while casting" mean? When casting a cast time spell it's obvious but what about instant casts? Do I get the 10% damage reduction while the GCD is active after a Flame Shock?
Magic damage reduction from EW doesn't sound so great at first but isn't pretty much all damage we take in a raid/dungeon magical? The boss is never hitting us after all, right? Most of those damage auras and void zones deal magic damage as far as I know. Are there significant sources of physical damage for a ranged dps?

If you see a cast bar while you have that talent, your received dmg is reduced by 10% (instants don't count). I don't know if that's before or after mitigation/resistances but it should work like similar mechanics.
If you're raiding, there will always be some incoming dmg that you can't avoid.

So which one is better for the left over points to save the healers mana?

Good question. It's 12% magic dmg reduction vs 10% dmg (all sources) reduction while casting. One takes 3 points, the other is only 2. I think most physical dmg occurs when you wouldn't be able to move, mitigating the usefulness of AR for elemental shamans. If you have spare points are are choosing between the two, as elemental, I'd take EW.

I'm not sure where you're getting these extra talent points from

PvE
, I get 3 left over points with 1/2 Reverb. I don't know how good 2/2 Reverb is, but that would still leave 2 free points.

2/2 Reverb, 2/2 Totemic Reach. Isnt that the cookie cutter?

You mean Elemental Reach. Yes, that one is pretty much mandatory.
Reverberation on the other hand is not. I'd even go with 0/2 in it since Shocks aren't used on cooldown anyway so the cooldown reduction seems pretty pointless. The only benefit is that Fulmination stacks can be managed a bit easier but just practicing on the dummy for an hour should make that easy enough even with the 6s shock cooldown.
This is my favorite ele spec with glyphs and 3 free points to place between EW and AR (can't max both):

Oh and I should mention that my main spec is healing so that's why I'm so set on reducing the damage I take when in my off spec to make the other healers life easier ;)

I don't see why Totemic Reach would be cookie cutter, Searing Totem already has a 35 yrd range for elemental.
Binkenstein's guide
lists Acuity, Convection, Lava Surge, Reverberation, and Totemic Reach as the optional talents for his cookie cutter spec (which includes Totemic Reach). Lava Surge was interesting, but he also mentions EW and AR. It looks like Elemental has a LOT more wiggle room with talents than most other specs.

On movement fights every bit of additional range is important. Less movement means more time spent on the optimal rotation and more range usually means less walking around. That's why I consider Elemental Reach mandatory.
Additionally the Searing Totem range just seems very low when playing Restoration. Having to run into 35y range just to drop totems and worrying all the time if the boss is still in range is just annoying.
