Expertise.... and tanking

a "simple" question... i'm going to do this
quest
.
there are two nice tanking weapons.
The first one is
Crescent of Brooding Fury
while the second one is
Hammer of Quiet Mourning
.
The second one has defense and dodge rating... and more strength so i would say more block rating as well.
The first one instead has the stat of Expertise.
I would go for the
Hammer of Quiet Mourning
but i don't know how expertise works for a protection warrior as i am... and what it confuses me is that if make a search considering a warrior protection as a scale.... the Crescent of Brooding Fury is considered more important.
so.... what should i choose?

Expertise isn't just a DPS/TPS stat, it also reduces the damage you take, and unlike regular avoidance stats, expertise focuses specifically on damage spikes and reduces their frequency.

is what I took, because its a fast weapon and gettin Def. capped will be easy at 80.
that's exactly what i would take if i were a death knight (parry and dogde since defense is less important considering i miss the "block" stat)....
Just to understand a bit more how expertise works what does it means that it reduce the damage i take :/ ?

I took the mace over the axe (human racial), but all three are great tank weapons, and I wish I could have grabbed all of them. :-)
