Fine-Tuning an Amusing Script/Macro

For grins and giggles, I made macros that will emote and/or /say (/yell, etc.) when I cast a spell. For example, my "Avenger's Boop" macro is:
#showtooltip
/cast Avenger's Shield
/boop
I had another line, "/y Booped your nose!", but that got repetitive, and my macro has some issues. For example, I /boop even if I'm not targeting anything, and even if I'm out of range for Avenger's Shield on my target. Here's what I'd like to do:
I'd like to make it so the /boop only "fires" if/when I get a successful cast on Avenger's Shield. Otherwise, I don't want to /boop unless I do it manually. I'd also like to know how to write a script that will deliver a random line of dialog whenever I cast Avenger's Shield. Instead of always saying "Booped your nose," I'd like it if the macro or script would pull one line at random from a list of (short) dialogs, if that makes sense.
My apologies if this has been covered, but after scouring the Internet between last night and today, I haven't found anything. You may safely assume my macro knowledge is basic, and my knowledge of scripts is next to nothing. I know what a script is, but I haven't the foggiest how to write one properly.

It's not possible to determine in a macro whether an ability was successfully cast, or is on cooldown etc.
However, there are addons that can do that, as sending chat messages from addon code isn't that restricted. Don't know the names of current addons though, the one I used hasn't been updated in years.

I appreciate the information. I'll look around. I just noticed I was having a problem with a lot of /boops, and it was getting annoying. I'll see if an add-on would work better for what I want to do.
